The multiple facets of India

comunicato stampa

The multiple facets of India - at the crossroads of art and modernity - represent the heart of the first edition of lille3000. We will be able to enjoy metamorphoses in the city, artists’ installations, exhibitions, cinema, performances and parades, tastes of Bangalore, Bombay (Mumbai), Brick Lane... and Finland.
Another recurrent theme of lille3000 is the avant-garde, with visions of the future interlinking with the Indian events. Examples include Les modernite's recycle'es, La Maison de l'Energie Vitale and the Futurotextiles exhibition, where innovation and technology come together in interaction with contemporary art.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a voyage across India in the different lille3000 venues and museums of the area. Highlights include: discovering Bombay or Chandigarh, cultural traditions, images and icons, religious rituals, artists’ installations...

List of the events

BOMBAY, MAXIMUM CITY

TRI POSTAL, 1st FLOOR, LILLE
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007

With eighteen million inhabitants, Bombay is the economic centre of India. However, it is also the city with the largest shanty town in Asia. A paradoxical and intense megapolis.
Bombay, Maximum City is an exhibition in which we are invited to “feel" the city, to witness an approach which compares and contrasts the experience of artists, architects, economists and residents.
Photographers, indian and international artists help us understand Bombay, giving us signs and senses of the megapolis.

FUTUROTEXTILES

TRI POSTAL, 2nd FLOOR, LILLE
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007

You may be aware of waterproof or stretch fabrics, but there is so much more to be discovered in the world of new textiles! Research conducted by local, national and international textile firms is finding ever more extreme fabrics and applications, such as basalt thread, luminous lace wedding dresses, recycled poufs or microencapsulated material with perfumed or hydrating qualities. The exhibits are intriguing, sometimes utopian, and are synonymous with the avant-garde and concepts of better living.

LE TROISIEME OEIL (Third Eye)

TRI POSTAL, GROUND FLOOR, LILLE
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007

India is a multi-faith country, charged with spirituality and history, and has become a place ever-associated with meditation. In Lille, the unique spirit of the Indian continent will be reconstituted, reflecting the omnipresence of astrology, myths, rituals, arranged marriages and music in Indian spiritual life. Le troisie'me œil (Third Eye) presents a double vision of the mystique of India as seen through the eyes of both Indian and Western artists fascinated by the sacred dimension of India, using video, plastic arts, music, cinema…

LA FABRIQUE (The factory)
Video installation by Tania Mouraud

TRI POSTAL, GROUND FLOOR, LILLE
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007

Tania Mouraud will present a multimedia installation - created following to her reportage in the South of India in the village of Trivandrum.
The faces of one hundred and fifty workers are displayed on a multitude of monitors. The deafening sounds of their weaving work transfix the visitor with mechanical repetition. Their bodies are contorted and combine to become the motor of a strange factory.

INDOMANIA - INDIAN POPULAR ART

HOSPICE COMTESSE MUSEUM, LILLE
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007
From Wednesday to Sunday 14.00 - 18.00

A collection of exceptional images where, for example, upon a background of Swiss mountains, gods and goddesses are exposed outrageously to the camera lens. This marriage of eroticism and the sacred heralds the birth of kitsch, as early as the 19th century with the paintings of Ravi Varma, and prefigures today’s Bollywood imagery. From Germany to Switzerland, from London to colonial India: Indian popular art as a reflection of the world conquered by the fixed image.

L'HOMME PAYSAGE (Man Landscape)

LILLE FINE ARTS MUSEUM
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007

A thematic exhibition, L’Homme paysage proposes different representations of nature transformed by the visions of artists from the 16th century to the present day. Sometimes aesthetic mirages and sometimes projections of fantasy, these works deliver a strong metaphysical message in terms of the place occupied by humanity in the universe, via various plastic art forms (painting, sculpture, photography…).

LE CORBUSIER A CHANDIGARH

TOURCOING FINE ARTS MUSEUM
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007
In 1947, the newly-independent India handed over parts of Punjab to Pakistan, including the state capital, Lahore. A new capital was therefore needed. Nehru, Prime Minister at the time, confided the task of designing the new capital city to Le Corbusier. The famous French architect was hence able for the first time to apply his urban planning, architectural and artistic theories on a grand scale.

LONDRES, BOMBAY: VILLES DU FUTUR ?
(London, Bombay: cities of the future?)

LE FRESNOY, STUDIO NATIONAL DES ARTS CONTEMPORAINS, TOURCOING
14 OCTOBER 2006 > 14 JANUARY 2007
This exhibition is the consequence of two observations.
Firstly, that the majority of parallels drawn between London and Bombay result from economic imperatives common to the two cities.
Secondly, that the Le Fresnoy, thanks to its architectural characteristics and large exhibition spaces, lends itself particularly well to the proposal by the architect and film director Patrick Keiller, namely of visually reconstituting the Victoria Terminus Railway Station, in Bombay.
Today, Bombay train station is alive with travellers from all over India: more than one and a half million people pass through it every day. Bollywood film-makers make ample use of the station; with their heroes and heroines often arriving in the big city at the Victoria Terminus...
