Opere recenti

Alessandra Anichini

*****

Two groups of paintings form this exhibition. In the first room we find collage paintings of familiar places, gardens and interiors revisited through imagination and longing. Slivers of photographs insinuate their way into the painted image, rearranging the space and disturbing the scale of things. In these pictures Heather McReynolds translates ordinary places into poetic worlds where memory meets dream.

The other part of the exhibit has to do with objects: items of clothing, quilts, still life. Bits of lace and old handkerchiefs mingle with paint. An object is suspended, out of context, with the solitary detachment of an icon. Christening gown, apron, bouquet. Objects and their layers of associations become a translucent veil through which we glimpse the mystery of creation.

Heather's paintings are gifts of memories, snatches of song, picked up and held for an instant in the stillness beyond the monumental stream of time where all desire, all memories, collections and treasures will subside. A dreamer awakens and seeks for a moment a fugitive dream as it evaporates into daylight. Where did it go? Only guessing and wishing, so humble and human, glueing a photo on a page, pressing a leaf in a book, falling from earth, becoming a star. These paintings whisper to us in the language of universal intimacy. Jenny Junker
