New Works. Another Green World

Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of "Another Green World", new mixed media paintings and drawings by New York artist Robert Appleton. The exhibition will be on view from November 14 through December 16, 2006. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November 16, from 6 - 9 PM.

"Another Green World" refers to other places within a human context - in the spiritual, psychological, and the metaphysical. The artist explores pathos as his subjects deal, seduce, escape, and decide. Works in the exhibition observe how humans are inherently contradictory: productive/destructive; deliberate/spontaneous; and here/there. "Another Green World" speaks to adventure and escapism through travel, books, and a multitude of named and unnamed coping mechanisms.

Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and the Genesis story inform the paintings and drawings. The artist's exploration looks to philosophical and psychological changes through the course of life from childhood through adulthood to the prospect of death.

"Regarding The White Horse," a small painting of two canvases joined and layered with paint and vellum, depicts a white horse in a meadow and an imaginary figure - with a foot as a head - reaching out tenderly towards the animal. Typical in scale for the artist and derived from classical portraiture and landscape painting, the artist brings a fresh twist that is both naive and sophisticated. His work embodies an awkward beauty.

The exhibition features works on paper, some mounted on canvas, some collaged. A small sculptural piece of butterflies made with solarized paper adds to the sense of flight and transcendence.

Appleton will be included in a show curated by Millie Burns at the Hewitt Gallery of Art, Marymount Manhattan College in New York in December. Previously his oeuvre has been included in reviews and photo reproductions in Gay City News, The New York Sun, and other publications. The artist lives and works in New York City. The artist is represented by PSCA and this will be his second solo show at the gallery.

In the viewing room - Andrew Cornell Robinson

Concurrent with "Another Green World," PSCA will present works by Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Cornell Robinson in the viewing room. These intensely personal, narrative paintings and constructions allude to portraiture as does Appleton's work, but also to the layering of memory, experiences, and aspirations. Some of the large scale works are installed as altars with the painting propped on a wooden support, further referencing the reverences of the past. This is the first time PSCA has had the privilege to show Robinson's work and his first mini-exhibition in Chelsea.

Opening: Thursday, November 16, from 6 - 9 PM
