The Photographs of Man Ray

Walker Art Center, Minneapolis

comunicato stampa

"The streets are full of admirable craftsmen, but so few practical dreamers," observed Man Ray. A highly influential and prolific American artist who was associated with both the Dada and Surrealist movements, Man Ray was active in avant?garde as well as commercial circles, and over the course of his long career he produced sculptures, films, drawings, and photographs in an effort to reimagine what we consider beautiful.

Organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and drawn from its extensive collection of photographs, the exhibition focuses on Man Ray?s photographic work and includes 100 vintage prints spanning the period from 1916 to the 1950s. It chronicles his early work in New York, his years in Paris, and the decade he spent in Hollywood during and after World War II. Highlights are selections from Les champs délicieux, a portfolio of photograms (or cameraless photographs) published in 1922; portraits of cultural luminaries such as Marcel Duchamp, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Marcel Proust; solarized prints, double exposures, and other darkroom experiments; and many images of the women in his life, from his muse, the infamous Kiki of Montparnasse, to his last wife Juliet. For the Walker presentation, a selection of Man Ray?s films will be screened continuously in the galleries, and a group of vintage journals will showcase his commercial fashion photography.
