Intervention II, works in situ

Daniel Buren is one of France’s most renowned artists. More than thirty years after his first exhibition at the Gallery, Modern Art Oxford is delighted to be working with the artist on the creation of a new exhibition.

Since 1965, when he first began working with what has become his signature motif of alternating white and coloured stripes of equal and of non-variable sizes, Buren has created dramatic and thought-provoking interventions in museums and public spaces around the world. Hugely influential on younger generations of artists, Buren’s work remains embedded in a refined pictorial sensibility of colour and form, which he uses to engage the viewer in a visual and physical dialogue with space.

Although Buren has produced innumerable projects internationally, including major shows at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2005 and the Muse'e national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris in 2002, his work remains little known in Britain. His first exhibition in a public gallery in this country was held at the Museum of Modern Art Oxford (since 2002 Modern Art Oxford) in 1973. Buren suspended a series of vertically-striped canvases from the superstructure of the large upstairs gallery, to create a sequence of flowing vertical planes that cut across the space at right angles to the gallery’s outer walls.

The exhibition at Modern Art Oxford presents a new work that creates a permeable space, in which elements of the Gallery’s architecture are multiplied. The exhibition also features drawings and a series of “film-souvenirs" relating to earlier projects realised by the artist.

The exhibition is part of Paris Calling, a season of contemporary art from France taking place in galleries, museums and art centres in and around London in Autumn 2006. Modern Art Oxford is one of only two venues outside London involved in Paris Calling.

Daniel Buren will be in conversation with Michael Craig-Martin at Modern Art Oxford on Wednesday 24 January, 6.30pm. Please contact the Gallery for details on +44 (0)1865 722733.

To coincide with the exhibition, Modern Art Oxford is producing a fully illustrated book including an interview with Daniel Buren and documentation of the artist’s projects realised in the UK.

Notes to Editor

Daniel Buren is available for interview prior to the exhibition opening and will be present at the press view on Friday 3 November, 1pm to 4pm.

Biography

Daniel Buren was born in 1938 in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris. He studied at the E'cole des Me'tiers d'Art and E'cole Nationale Supe'rieure des Beaux Arts. At the start of his career he worked closely with Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni. By 1965 Buren had begun making paintings with linen pre-printed with alternating bands of white and color that he found at the Marche' Saint-Pierre, a textiles market in Montmartre, Paris. Working in situ he began using the stripe as a means of visually relating art to its situation; a form of language in space rather than a space in itself. He set up hundreds of striped posters around Paris and later in more than 100 metro stations, drawing public attention through his unauthorised acts. In another controversial gesture, at his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Apollinaire in Milan in 1968, he blocked the gallery entrance with a striped support.

In the 1970s and 1980s he presented exhibitions in Europe, America and Japan. His work was the subject of controversy at the 5th International Exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1971, when it was removed before the exhibition opened to the public and in 1972 at the celebrated Documenta V organised by Harald Szeemann. In 1986 he represented France at the Venice Biennale and was awarded the prestigious Golden Lion Award. In the same year he realised a controversial public commission in the courtyard of the Palais Royal in Paris, Les Deux Plateaux, a 3,000m² sculpture commonly referred to as “Les Colonnes de Buren" (Buren's Columns), which provoked an intense debate over the integration of contemporary art and historic buildings. He returned to the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2005 for his critically acclaimed exhibition The Eye of the Storm. For the 2006 Venice Architectural Biennale, Buren has collaborated with architect Patrick Bouchain, designer Francis Lacloche and the architectural collective EXYZT.

Referred to as “the stripe guy", Buren’s interventions also take the form of solid and reflective planes of colour and transparency, made with paint, laser cut fabric, light boxes and constructions on an architectural scale. His works are displayed in museums and public spaces throughout the world.

Arrivals>Estonia: Kristina Norman The Pribalts
3 November 2006 to 7 January 2007

For Arrivals>Estonia, Kristina Norman presents a new documentary that looks at the cultural community know as the Pribalts. This Russian word is used to indicate the Russian-speaking population of the Baltic States. The film follows several young members of this community, whose ancestors came into Estonia during the Soviet era, and is a study of integration and its effects on the artist’s group of childhood friends.

The Pribalts is a moving study of the gap between policy and what integration means for those people affected. It is a personal attempt to come to terms with the complex reality of the Pribalt community in modern Estonia. Norman takes up a case with which she is intimately familiar. By interviewing a group of childhood friends she tries to make sense of her values and ideas. At a time when issues around multiculturalism and integration are at the forefront of debates in Britain, Norman’s film raises searching questions around how cultural minorities are valued within an expanding EU.

Kristina Norman is the eighth artist to feature in Arrivals>New Art From The EU, a series of exhibitions over two years at Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, Margate introducing the work of artists from the expanded European Union.
