Victor Grippo
until 4 February 2007
This is the first ever large-scale exhibition in London of the work of influential Argentinean artist Victor Grippo (1936 - 2002). His sculptures and installations transform everyday materials through alchemical power. The humble potato (a universal food of the poor) becomes a symbol of dormant energy in Grippo's hands and represents the potential of suppressed peoples. Originally trained as a chemist, Grippo emerged as a painter and engraver in the politically-charged climate of 1950s Argentina. caption: Victor Grippo, Naturalizar al hombre, humanizar a la naturaleza, o Energia vegetal, 1977, Fundacion Victor Grippo, copyright the artist, courtesy Alexander and Bonin, New York.
David Austen: Smoking Moon
Reading Room
until 4 February 2007
David Austen’s much-anticipated first film 'Smoking Moon' is witty also desperately sad and affecting. An ancient crescent moon hangs in a black void smoking a cigarette. It is at the same time a trick with light, a self portrait and a recording of a performance. Often unashamedly nostalgic, his work speaks of fragility and longing. caption: Smoking Moon, 2006, courtesy of the artist.
