Recurrables. Video and sound installation
Erna Hecey Gallery is pleased to present Recurrables, a video installation by Vera
Weisgerber.
A condemned building with old wooden floors and ceilings and a creaky spiral
staircase provides the setting for Weisgerber's most recent video work, showing a
group of four children in differently colored dress moving about the antiquated
space. Through the use of superimposed images and time-delayed sound the video
projections create a playful, magical environment wherein the children appear as
translucent phantoms crossing through one another and footfalls echo in irregular
succession.
Another video, shot in the same space, of swirling dust clouds lit by sunbeams
further enhances this fantastical aesthetics. Projected at oblique angles on
white plinths, the different videos-themselves showing the same scene from multiple
perspectives-experiment with and destabilize the usual habits of sensual
perception. Weisgerber's installation involves a reconstruction of the original
spiral staircase, which thereby provides a kind of frame for the projected
'fantasies', as if the architecture in the video leapt out of its
representational confines and escaped into the real space of the gallery.
The title Recurrables, an invented term deriving from the word recur,
to repeat or come back, refers to the real core of Vera Weisgerber's work,
perception ant its recurrences, like the repeated scenes of children playing or
the recreation of elements of the now renovated building.
Recurrables is a co-production of Gallery Erna Hécey and Galerie Dominique
Lang (City of Dudelange, Luxemburg).
Since her studies at the Ecole de Recherche Graphique in Brussels and her residency
at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1997-98), Luxemburg
artist Vera Weisgerber has developed an impressive body of work, primarily
photographic and video, dealing with such subjects as the perception of the human
body, prosthetics, portraiture, the sky, travel, and interior spaces. Her approach
involves unexpected displacements and rearrangements of given material, and she
often makes use of unconventional exhibition spaces.
Since 1995, Weisgerber has participated in numerous solo and group shows, for which
many pieces were created in relation to the specific context. Some of the most
recent include: Kanner staark maachen, in collaboration with Bady Minck, MUDAM,
Luxembourg (LU) upcoming 2007; solo show at Galerie Dominique Lang, Dudelange (LU)
2006; Relocation 4, Tranzit Foundation, Meul d'Arte, Cluj (RO) and Casino

shop, project by Meschac Gaba, Documenta, Kassel (DE) 2002; Live sound project in
