Drawings
curated by Michael Semff
Max Peiffer Watenphul (1896 - 1976) is known primarily as a painter of
Italian scenes and a master of modern still life. In 1921, during his
studies at the Weimar Bauhaus, he visited Italy for the first time and
remained closely attached to the country for the rest of his life. The
landscape of Southern Italy, in particular, with its palm trees and agava
appealed to his soul and found expression in his melancholically serene and
timeless paintings.
In addition to his paintings, he created a number of independent, powerful
drawings that until now were largely unknown. They include works on paper in
which the artist dedicates himself to his favourite subject, southern
landscapes, but also drawings in which Peiffer Watenphul turns his attention
to the rugged mountain range of Sterzing, Cortina d'Ampezzo and Gossensass,
a landscape that on the one hand is rejected as »souless« yet on the other
captures his imagination. In his at times vehement discourse and attempts to
grow close to the landscapes he produced drawings of brittle beauty. The
artist himself characterised them as »scribblings, and that is what they are
meant to be. But on an entirely different level!«. Of great significance for
Peiffer Watenphul was the discovery of the »scribblings« of Paul Klee in
1915 at an exhibition in Munich, whilst he was still a young student.
The exhibition of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung presents a selection of
some 80 drawings and sketch books from private collections, with the focus
being on the 1930's and 1940's. Never before have the works by the
draughtsman Peiffer Watenphul been shown on such a large scale. In addition
to these works there is also a display of bright watercolours painted during
his travels to Morocco and a selection of watercolours depicting Italian
landscapes that the artist bequeathed to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung
during his lifetime.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue (112 pages, 64 coloured
illustrations).
