Counter Editions are pleased to announce the release of 'Cake', a
series of 12 fruit cakes by Sarah Lucas. Each cake is produced in an edition
25, and comes with a signed, dated, and numbered box-certificate.
Lucas has frequently incorporated food elements into her work, often with
deeply surreal results. Melons, kippers, bananas, Russian salad, chickens,
and raw steak have all appeared in her work, perhaps most famously in 'Two
Fried Eggs and a Kebab'(1992).
For Counter Editions Lucas has produced a series of twelve cakes. Each cake
carries a photograph, printed onto the iced surface using edible inks and
inkjet technology. Forming a kind of Lucas mini-retrospective, the twelve
images include well known self-portraits, photo-collages, and body casts.
The cakes have been produced by Cakes Direct, a wedding cake specialist, and
are a rich fruit recipe soaked with rum.
'Cake' event: Thursday 5th - Sunday 8th July, 2001
The 12 cakes will also be shown at an event, by appointment only, in the
drawing room of a Huguenot house in Spitalfields, London. All visitors to
the house will be offered tea and a slice of cake. To make an appointment to
see the cakes please contact Kate MacGarry at the number below.
