Jazz Festival

Plaza de la Trinidad, Donostia

The 36th San Sebastian Jazz Festival will take place between the 24th and the 29th of July. Like in years before the program is a real Who Is Who of the Jazz world: Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Bobby McFerrin, Gato Barbieri, Joe Zawinul, The Brecker Brothers, Ray Brown or Ahmad Jamal are some of the names of this year's roundup. It is important to point out that many of these musicians have never been to our Festival in spite of its 35 editions.

The Festival starts on the 24th at the Plaza de la Trinidad with an extraordinary double program: Frank Sinatra Jr. with the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Brecker Brothers with their Acoustic Band.

Charlie Haden - Pat Metheny: The Missouri Sky Duets
The Keith Jarret Trio concert at the Kursaal Auditorium last year was a milestone in the history of the Festival. A group of extraordinary selected musicians in a setting that enhanced their acoustic and stage emotion made an unforgettable event for all the enthusiasts that were lucky to see them in this new Temple of Music. At least something similar will take place on the 25th of July at 9 pm with the concert of two great musicians in duo: Guitar player Pat Metheny and bass player Charlie Haden at the same concert hall.
The Brecker Brothers, Zawinul, Gato Barbieri, Ray Brown and Las Estrellas de la Calle 54 at the Plaza de la Trinidad

The Festival starts on the 24th at the Plaza de la Trinidad with an extraordinary double program: Frank Sinatra Jr. with the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Brecker Brothers with their Acoustic Band.
At the Plaza de la Trinidad on the 26th once again Charlie Haden but this time with his Quartet West, one of the most important regular bands in today's jazz. After them Joe Zawinul's Special Project, Weather Report's bandleader and a member of the Jazz Olympus by his own right. Maria Joao a well known Portuguese singer will be singing as a guest.

Also at the Plaza de la Trinidad on the next day, one of the great sensations of the summer festival circuit, Las Estrellas de la Calle 54, a reunion of Latin jazz musicians around Calle 54 (54th Street), a film by Fernando Trueba (awarded an Oscar by Belle Epoque). Bebo Valdés, Patato Valdés (no relation), Chano Domínguez, Jerry González and many other Latin musicians will be there.

Two legendary names in jazz will play at the Plaza de la Trinidad on the 28th, the Argentinean sax player Gato Barbieri together with Italian trumpet player Enrico Rava will show us what they are capable of doing with their talent. And after them a tribute to Ray Brown on his 75th birthday will get together a real super band with Hank Jones, Alvin Queen and James Morrison. Mr. Brown will be receiving the San Sebastian Jazz Festival Award to his outstanding career.
The grand finale: Bobby McFerrin

The Festival will close with one of the great stars in jazz. On Sunday 29th of July Bobby McFerrin will be singing for the first time in San Sebastian at the Plaza de la Trinidad, and he will be doing it with three of the greatest, Gil Goldstein on piano, Cameroon's singer and bass player Richard Bona and Omar Hakim on drums. The opening act will be the singer Alexis Hightower, Gil Scott-Heron's advantaged follower.
Chamber Music: the great Ahmad Jamal
But, of course, this is not all. The Chamber Music Series at the Chamber Hall of the Kursaal Center will be having three of the most interesting concerts and of the most different styles. On the 25th the legendary piano player Ahmad Jamal in his first visit to San Sebastian. Inimitable roll model for generations of jazz musicians: he was quoted by Miles Davis as the most important jazz musician he had met. On the 26th we are having the Kronos Quartet. A group born under a classical style that plays jazz and ethnic music in a very original way. On Friday the 27th David Mengual's Mosaic (trio and nonet) will be at the Chamber Hall. This Catalonian bass player introduced by Satchmo Jazz magazine has one of the most important jazz projects in Spain nowadays.

Other bands that will be in San Sebastian these days are: the quintet headed by Dawn Thomson, a great singer and guitar player, and John Nugent, an outstanding sax player; Aka Moon, an avant garde Belgian band that is among the most interesting new propositions in jazz; Soulive, in a modern groove style; and one of the European voices that has already reached stardom, the Swedish singer Lisa Ekdahl, with a project based on the songs by the famed composer and guitar player Salvadore Poe.
