13th edition
13th edition
For its 13th edition, VISIONS DU REEL pursues its exploration of the multiple aspects of cinéma du
réel thanks to its best authors and asserts more than ever its vocation of discovering new talents.
Arsinée Khanjian in the International Jury
VISIONS DU REEL is happy to welcome into the heart of the International Jury Arsinée Khanjian, the
brilliant Canadian actress of Armenian origin, seen notably last year at the Festival in Citadel by Atom
Egoyan.
Heimaktlänge at the opening of the Festival
Projection of Heimatklänge by Stefan Schwietert at the opening evening, in the presence of the Federal
Councillor Pascal Couchepin, and of Armin Walpen, Director General of SRG SSR idée suisse. This film is
also presented in the International Competition.
The international Competition
Alain Cavalier will be at the Festival to enable viewers to discover his Lieux Saints in world Première, beside
Mika Kaurismäki and his Sonic Mirrors, also in world Première, a fascinating study into the unifying virtues
of music throughout the world. It is also a question of music in Heimatklänge by Stefan Schweitert and in
Retour à Gorée, the new feature film by the Swiss Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, a return to the origins of Afro-
American rhythms in the company of Youssou N'Dour. It is also worth making a note of Manufactured
Landscapes by the Canadian Jennifer Baichwal with photography by Peter Mettler, and The Big Sellout
by the German Florian Optiz. Stéphane Breton, Anastasia Lapsui, Markku Lehmuskallio, Frederick
Wiseman and Claudio Pazienza will also be making the journey to Nyon with their latest works.
Regards Neufs
A world tour of new authors and varied, sometimes suprising themes. From an Afghan body-building contest
(Afghan Muscles) to a Polish weekend at the "datcha" (At the datcha) taking in the painful fight of a
Chinese chiild against cancer (Doctor) and behind-the scenes dramas at CHUV (Le théâtres des
operations), VISIONS DU REEL multiplies points of view, providing a pertinent and comprehensive
commentary on society.
Tendances
World première presentation of Bruno Manser - Laki Penan by Christophe Kühn, who took off for Borneo
on the traces of the militant and environmentalist Bruno Manser. Gary Burns and Jim Brown, for their part,
take their microscopes to view life in a Canadian suburb (Radiant City, Canada). Also in the programme, Où
est l'amour dans la palmeraie? by Jérôme Lemaire (Belgium), Strawberry Fields by Ayet Heller (Israël)
and Stone, Time, Touch by Gariné Torossian (Canada).
Helvétiques
If 2007 marks the return of Pierre Maillard (Alain Tanner, pas comme si, pas comme ça) and of Richard
Dindo (La maternité des HUG), it is also the opportunity to discover the new films by Alberto Venzago
(Mein Bruder, der Dirigent),by Juliette Frey (Thérèse) and African rap with Magic Radio by Luc Peter
and Stéphanie Barbey.
Fictions du Réel
Fiction can also portray reality with aptness and acuity, as the film Ghost proves, a poignant tale of
immigration by Nick Broomfield and presented at the closing ceremony this year. The Festival also offers
Khadak, by Peter Brossens and Jessica Woodworth, an exclusive showing before its general release in
November.
Investigations
VISIONS DU REEL provokes debate by going at cross currents with established values. In Manufacturing
Dissent: Uncovering Michael Moore , the Canadian film directors Debbie Melnyck and Rick Caine
question the pertinence of Michael Moore's work while the Polish Miroslaw Dembinski films the orange
Belorussian revolution from the angle of the young opponents in A Lesson of Belorussian. An evening
debate with the DDC, Jeunes et révolutionnaires will echo the theme of this film. The practices of
Poutine's regime are at the core of In Memoriam Litvinenko, by Jos de Putter, a conversation with the
former secret agent assassinated last November.
The Ateliers
Two film makers, two very different worlds. The Frenchwoman Claire Simon (Coûte que coûte, Ça brûle)
and the Dutchman of Indonesian origin Leonard Retel Helmrich (Promised Paradise) open their minds and
hearts to the public to reveal their inspirations, their working methods and their mechanisms of creation.
Séance spéciale François Reichenbach
VISIONS DU REEL devotes a special evening to François Reichenbach (1921-1993), passionate "man
with the camera", director of L'Amérique insolite (1958), with notably the testimony of Françoise Widhof,
friend of the Festival and colleague of the film maker who disappeared too soon.
Séance spéciale Plans Fixes
An anthology of the best portraits in the unique collection called Plans Fixes. An opportunity to discover, or
rediscover, the cultural heritage of French-speaking Switzerland with Ella Maillart, Michel Corboz or Nicolas
Bouvier. In world Première, the two Plans Fixes devoted to Jean Ziegler and Alain Tanner.
Reprocessing Reality
Clarisse Hahn (Karima, Les protestants) is at the heart of the section Reprocessing Reality. This is the first
time that the films of the French video filmer have been the subject of a special programme and debate in a
film festival. It is all about the keen look that Clarisse Hahn casts on physical and social phenomena (ageing,
pornography, sado-masochism, protestantism). Halfway between proximity and distance, the rules of the
game concerning transgression and moderation.
A l'écoute du Réel
For this entirely new section, the auditorium is plunged into semi-darkness and real life stories told by radio.
A world without pictures, save those one imagines behind closed eyes. The selection of this first edition
comprises only documents in the French language, selected in France and Belgium.
Exhibitions: Naomi Kawase and Vincent Dieutre
Discovered in Nyon in 1996, Naomi Kawase has pride of place in the exhibition Ha, Ha by Shunji Dodo
(International première) from 15 April to 20 May at the Galerie Focale, with photographs of the childbirth of
the Japanese film maker. Vincent Dieutre chose the Château de Nyon for her Sans titre (Lisboa 2006), the
first installation created by a film director well known to Visions du Réel and presented here in world
Première.
OFC Round Table: "What is a film festival?"
On the occasion of the first competition between film festivals, the OFC (Federal Office of Culture) launches
the debate. The different protagonists take the floor and give their views on their aims, their desires and their
visions of a film festival.
The Doc Outlook International Market
This year again, meetings between Swiss and international professionals taking part in the Doc Outlook will
encourage and promote the coproduction and distribution of films.
