Urban Transfer - The City Dynamic Urban Transfer - The City Dynamic by Kermit Berg
No other place in Germany better represents the dynamic of today's city than Potsdamer Platz. Having incurred the bombing destruction of World War II, and having survived becoming the no-man's-land between two ideologies during the Cold War, Potsdamer Platz awoke after the reunification of Germany to a vibrant new life. The legend of the past as Berlin's busiest intersection continues as over 70,000 people pass through the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden daily. On the main level of the Arkaden, an extensive representation of work by American photographer and artist Kermit Berg powerfully reflects the dynamic, the pace, and the renewal of today's Berlin.

A photographic subway ride through New York, interrupted by "unexpected" stops in the Munich U-Bahn & London Underground, a nightbus ride through Berlin and a stop in the Berlin Hauptbahnhof, only to exit the train back in New York - this disorienting global transit ride is concurrently realized by Berg in the Ephraim-Palais site specific installation of the nearly 60 foot long work-on-paper titled "Umsteigen, Bitte!" or "Transfer Here!" As in the 80 other archival numbered prints on watercolor paper in the exhibition, the artist reports from today's Metropolis. Using digital techniques Berg collages his photographic images, processes color, and abstracts the urban milleu.

Kermit Berg, born in 1951 near Chicago, lives and works in Berlin and New York. He studied Fine Art and Graphic Design in the United States, taught at the Art Institute of Chicago. His early work focused on conceptual art and painting.
