Rotterdam Panorama

Kunsthal, Rotterdam

Rotterdam as seen by European masters. From Turner to Chabot, from Duchamp to Jongkind - a host of painters have portrayed the metropolis on the river Maas while they were there. An international selection shows just how these artists were inspired by Rotterdam's townscape.

Rotterdam as seen by European masters From Turner to Chabot, from Duchamp to Jongkind - a host of painters have portrayed the metropolis on the river Maas while they were there. An international selection shows just how these artists were inspired by Rotterdam's townscape.

Impressionist canvases by Luce, Boudin and Signac, Albert Marquet's expressionist views of the port, Hendrik Chabot's dramatic rendering of the 1940 conflagration, early and often less familiar works by international innovators such as Kandinsky or Schwitters and - rarely shown because of its size (3 x 5 metres) - Hesmert's panorama of 1904 make this exhibition a feast for the people of Rotterdam and other lovers of art.

The Kunsthal Rotterdam stages some 25 exhibitions a year. The Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense of the word: old art, new art, design, photography - from elitist to popular. The Kunsthal frequently experiments with themes which in many cases provide the first impulse for an exhibition. This approach has resulted in an exciting and varied exhibition repertoire highlighting master-forger Han van Meegeren, lingerie, Lancia, Leonardo da Vinci, the Hague School of painters, children's furniture from all over the world and 19th-century cat portraits. More than 3300 square metres of exhibition space are available in the striking building designed by Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas - a work of art in its own right, making a visit to the Kunsthal well worth your while.
