'What is Life without Love' is a work that relies on direct experience
and interaction and is a work that cannot fail to communicate to all
that see it. A musty room is built from limited props including a
dressing table, stool, wedding dress and bookshelf. The work relies on a
profound atmosphere that is generated through this collection of props
and through a subtle background soundtrack.
On entering into the environment one cannot help but be affected. The
mood is soulful, profound and instantly felt. Various triggers are
designed to provoke a reaction based around the theme of love that may
depend entirely on one's own subjective experience. As the artist
states:
'I was hoping that this piece would stimulate people's memory and
emotion and allow them to contemplate their own love myth'.
Visitors are given the option to interact directly with the piece by
writing down any relevant stories or lies that they have previously told
or been told. These 'tales of love' bring to mind the confessional box
where one can reveal the most guarded information to an anonymous
recipient without fear of repercussion. These tales will be used by the
artist in work at a later date.
