New work

New York artist Teo González opens a solo exhibition of recent paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art on May 31, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, June 7 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. González has created a new group of minimalist paintings achieved through placing thousands of individual paint drops on canvas. Using the grid as a point of departure, organic rhythms emerge from the seeming rigidity into fluid and dynamic compositions that engage and captivate the viewer. The exhibition continues through July 28.

While the artist's disciplined methodology is paramount to the creation of these works, the subtle variations of the drops collectively subsume the process to become compelling abstract fields of movement and dimension. The paintings are a quiet discourse of contradictions- light and dark, micro versus macro, time and timelessness. González works with an emulsion of his own making, which forces the pigment to the outer edge of each droplet as it dries, creating a ghost-like trace that bears likeness to cellular forms.

The works on view, ranging in size from 12 to 72 inches square, reflect the artist's refined sense of color and use of a limited palette. As well as painting in black on white and clear blue on dark Prussian blue, González has ventured to paint with 23 karat gold pigment. In these paintings, as the viewer's position changes in relation to the work, the flickering reflections of light on the gold paint against the copper blue field is reminiscent of the optical effects of sunlight on moving water.

Teo González was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1964. He received his BFA from California State University, Bakersfield, and currently lives in New York City. In recent years, his work has been acquired by the public collections of the Achenbach Foundation, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the San Diego Museum of Art. This is González's seventh solo show with Brian Gross Fine Art.
