comunicato stampa

From 1st June until 7th October 2007 the Neue Nationalgalerie exclusively presents approximately 150 paintings and sculptures of 19th-century French art from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Renovation and expansion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's galleries opened a window of opportunity for these important paintings to be on show in Europe. The Neue Nationalgalerie is the only exhibition site in Europe.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art boasts the largest and most significant collection of 19th-century French art alongside the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Never before in its centenarian history has the Metropolitan Museum loaned so many of its treasured works of art. “Some of these masterpieces are leaving the museum for the first time, others for the last time”, says Philippe de Montebello, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among the exhibits are groundbreaking highlights of the epoch, including Ingres' “Odalisque in Grisaille”, Courbet's “Woman with a Parrot”, Manet's “Boating”, Degas' “The Dance Class”, Monet's “La Grenouillère”, Gauguin's “Ia Orana Maria” and Rodin's moving sculpture “The Burghers of Calais”. Due to the large number of paintings, entire rooms are dedicated to single artists, such as Corot, Courbet, Manet or Monet. The splendid diversity of these works of art reveals itself to the visitor in a breadth unparalleled by any other museum in Germany. For this limited period of time, the exhibition will provide a stellar complement to the magnificent Alte Nationalgalerie's (Old National Gallery) permanent collection containing German art of the same epoch, thus creating a cohesive panorama of this great era of novelty and transformation. Furthermore, this exhibition in Berlin evidences the close ties between the artistic axes Paris - Berlin and Paris - New York for more than a 100 years, hence reiterating the pioneering role that the Nationalgalerie's collection has played historically.

The exhibition is a cooperation between the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Berlin State Museums) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It was made possible by the Freunde der Nationalgalerie (Friends of the National Gallery) as the sole bearer of financial and organisational risk. WestLB is the main sponsor of this event. Together with our project sponsor Deutsche Telekom AG, a novel ticketing system has been developed that will allow our visitors to spend their waiting time as they please.

Media partners who have helped make the event known beyond the borders of Berlin include Die Welt, Deutsche Welle TV, RBB Television as well as all cultural broadcasting stations of the ARD that are cooperating in a national broadcasting partnership for the first time.

More than 2.300 guided tours were booked in advance within a few days. Due to cancellations, however, single guided tours will continue to be offered at irregular intervals. In addition to the guided tours, there will be ciceroni at the exhibition during the weekend by the name of “LIVE!SPEAKER”. It is their task to answer visitors’ questions and give brief introductions to the exhibition. The “LIVE!SPEAKER” project is sponsored by “Brigitte”.

Due to great demand for advance bookings (VIP tickets and guided tours), the “Earlybird Ticket” was introduced for the first time. This ticket will grant access to all early birds of Berlin and beyond to be the first to visit the exhibition on any one day during the week, to be booked in advance. During the week, admission is granted between 08:00 and 08:30 with a pre-booked online ticket. The duration of your visit is unlimited. Earlybird-Tickets are limited to the first 1000 tickets per day.
