Truka
Truka
"Truka" is the title of the new chapter of Pietro Roccasalva's anthology which is based on the display of a sculpture and a painting in conjunction with a video projection. Truka is the name of a special optical printer that allows the artist to create special effects on the film. With the support of this machine, the artist extended the projection of the fall of a hot air balloon, the only freeze-frame of "Andrei Rublev" by Andrei Tarkovsky. In the back of the gallery, a painting portrays a lift man: related to Roccasalva's previous works, this character is emblematic because in a sense, he is a Kafkian character that represents the metamorphis and the transition: metaphorically, his profession contrasts the idea of falling and “mise en abime”. Mysterious and symbolic, Roccasalva's installation is a smaller scale reproduction of his first solo show at the GAMeC in Bergamo, which will be exhibited simultaneously to the one at Art : Concept.
Italian artist Pietro Roccasalva deals with the concept of what he calls "situazione d’opera (art work’s situation)", by creating mise en scènes which involve associative and philosophical references. Obsessed by the notions of time, space, and absence, he works with these themes by creating a world of metaphors. Known for his spatial installations in which he incorporates various mediums, Pietro Roccasalva’s creative process always has a coinciding beginning and end: the painting.
In the same way that Roccasalva successfully combines a variety of mediums in his installations, he does the same with his personal iconography. Each image always determines the next, and every work carries a trace of something that has preceded it: a constant referring to iconographies--repeating but at the same time changing , in a variety of contexts which give birth to new situations. Influenced by a large breadth of inspirations and periods in time, these sources from which Roccasalva's metaphors are formed aide him in creating a unique and uncanny world.
Pietro Roccasalva has had previous solo shows at the Johnen + Schöttle, Köln, (2006), Hoet Bekaert Gallery, Gent (2006), Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (2006) ZERO, Milan (2005), and currently has an exhibition on view at GAMeC, Bergamo. His work has been seen in a large number of group shows including Prague Biennal 3, Prague (2007), “Apocalittici e Integrati”, MAXXI – Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Rome (2007), "Changes of mind: Belief and Transformation", Haunch of Venison, London (2005), “Forse Italia”, S.M.A.K. , Gent (2003), Tirana Biennal 2, Tirana (2003). He was also the 2005 recipient of the Furla Prize for Art.
