Alison Watt (born 1965) is one of the leading painters to emerge from Scotland in the last decade. In 1987 she won the National Portrait Gallery annual award and was subsequently invited to paint the Queen Mother. Last year the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh recognised her achievements by mounting a solo show of her most recent work.
Four paintings by Alison Watt will hang in the Linbury Room at Dulwich Picture Gallery at the same time as the Gallery's main exhibition, The Golden Age of Watercolours: The Hickman Bacon Collection.

Alison Watt's work has developed from portraits to figure compositions, nudes and still lifes. The paintings at Dulwich - her four most recent works - are large close-up studies of white draperies, reflecting the artist's admiration for the work of the great French neo-classical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The scale and technical mastery of these extraordinarily beautiful paintings gives them a surreal and enigmatic edge.

The Gallery is free for everyone on Fridays until 5 pm.
