Introduction to the exhibition by Beat Wismer
Scenes and Sequences – Peter Blum Edition Since 1980, Peter Blum has published a
series of graphic art editions in collaboration with some 30 artists. These volumes occupy
a unique position both in terms of the creative talent featured and the media explored.
The artists with whom Blum chooses to work are not linked by any particular unifying
style and employ a wide variety of pictorial techniques: from that most traditional
of media, the woodcut, to appropriated and altered photography. Blum’s publishing programme
is largely dictated by his own very personal approach and perspective. However,
by selecting artists with such a wide range of creative styles, from the abstract to the
conceptual to the figurative, his Editions also reflect the artistic pluralism of the last 25
years. Alongside the ambition to achieve new heights of aesthetic and technical quality,
another feature that makes these staggeringly high quality editions so unique is the close
collaboration between the publisher, printers and artists, some of whom were even persuaded
by Blum to try their hand at printmaking for the very first time.
