Cy Twombly

We are happy to present 6 new paintings which all have been completed in his hometown Lexington, Virginia, where the artist usually spends several months per year. 8 works on paper from 1986 complete the show.

The American Cy Twombly has been living in Italy for more than fifty years and is considered the most important artist of his generation. His fragile art bears witness to his sensitivity to the elegiac, the epic, the dramatic. His works extend the classic genres of painting, drawing and sculpture, leading beyond their general concepts: the markings he inserts are not mere signs but condense into pictorial gestures; his colour tones merge into visual tensions; the words he includes are more than just written characters, turning into lines that are vibrant with emotion.

A catalog with full-page colour reproductions of all the works included in the exhibition and an accompanying essay by Dr. Katharina Schmidt is in preparation and will be available in the fall.
