At gaze

After having participated in our group exhibition Solitude. London Artists Today last year, we are pleased to announce Marisa Favretto’s (born 1974) first solo show at upstairs berlin, inaugurating our 3rd floor space in the gallery building on Zimmerstrasse 90/91, staircase A2. The Alaska-born, Berlin-based painter shows metaphoric compositions dealing intensively with the nature of animals. In suggestive paintings Favretto assigns new meanings to different animals and their surroundings.

The subject-matter of illustrating animals has inspired artists for many centuries. Marisa Favretto expresses her fascination by objectifying single or grouped animals. In her oftentimes eerie oil paintings the artist deposes the animals turned into objects from their individuality, raising questions about their identity and the relationship between man and beast.

The title “at gaze” thereby pervades Favretto’s visual conception as a leitmotif defining a framework for relations. The artist’s gaze at the animals illustrates the connection between subject and object. Although it firstly appears as if “gaze” simply meant “look“, it also symbolises the significance of power. The mutuality of the gaze – man gazing at the beast, the beast looking back or around – reflects psychological power structures leaving the beholder superior to the object of his observation. This becomes especially evident when Favretto slips into the role of a hunter sighting a flock of deer through a telescope (Night Vision) or when she objectifies stag trophies as a wall pattern (Trophies in Process).
