For six years, as support programme
at the Pula Film Festival cinemania[c] is
exploring the relationship between art and cinema as the relationship
between
art and technology, their history as the history of experiments, taking
into
account the mark films left in our visual culture. Exhibition is
exploring
the way cinematographic aesthetic shapes and
affects perception of the world. Space between visual arts
and traditional cinematography is saturated with crossovers and hybrid
genres
and it is impossible to draw clear boundaries. While some artists work
with the
existing material by appropriation,
others explore endless possibilities of film and installation, dealing
with
codes and structures of the media. Therefore, Cinemania[c]
is a product of a meta-media society.
Works of art have absorbed language, technology and tricks of the
traditional spectacle based culture. Generations of contemporary artists explore
visual forms from Hollywood
, auteur and independent film, to MTV or reality TV.
The reciprocity of the world of art and the culture
of spectacle is an important feature of contemporary artworks.
Contemporary
art intertwines these two worlds, erasing the boundaries between high
and low,
elite and mass.
This
year’s edition of Cinemania[c]
deals with themes which continue to
critically question the inexhaustible cinematographic and cinephilic
issues:
old Hollywood, blockbusters and remakes, cinematographic myths,
stereotypes and
genres, the star system and their typology, film as the entertainment
industry and part of the popular culture.
In that context and entitled Retro,
remake, replay, the exhibition embraces a selection of video works
by the
Swedish artist Cecilia Lundqvist, a large scale video projection Sorry,
wrong number
by Lala Raščić, and objects and lightboxes by Ivan Fijolić from the
series Leitmotifs and Blockbuster.
Popular
culture, mass media, film and pop art represent a space of refference
in works by selected artists. The appropriation and recycling are their artistic
strategies, keys
to interpret their works as well as creative
and cognitive
process, and this strategy of appropriation exploits Hollywood. In
that way Hollywood narratives are
remodeled, revisited, adapted
and shown in form of critical or cynical pastiches.
