Loren graduated from Wimbledon School of Art with a BA (Hons) in
painting in 1990. Since then she has shown consistently and has enjoyed
a very successful four-year relationship with Clapham Art Gallery.
Indeed, this is her fourth one-person show at Clapham.
Loren is well known for her expertise in sea painting. Varying in scale
from tiny to five foot canvases Beven's lyrical acrylics are evocative
and dramatic, appearing timeless despite consisting of a frozen moment.
They reflect the continuous, cyclical nature of the movement of the sea
and allude to its power and mystery. The implication is specific time as
perpetual.
Loren's work is rooted in an idea of memory, be it experienced or
imagined. Working from photographic images she creates an atmosphere not
present in the original through various mark-making techniques. Broad,
flat brushstrokes are combined with finer more textured work to create a
sense of movement and depth in the water. Supported by a mastery of
light and atmospheric conditions Beven creates a reality that is both
modern and uncommon in a traditional subject matter.
