Dumping is a commercial strategy where one sets prices so artificially low
with the main objective of gaining an upper hand over the competition and
thus achieving an expanded control over the market.
The concept of dumping has been chosen to best define Latin American art and
especially Chilean art. This works and allows the formulation of a theory
over the possibilities of Latin American art, distanced from tropical or
exotic historical perceptions to a model of production closer to the actual
processes of the global commercialization of goods and services in which the
art forms its own rules and gains entrance to a cultural market place.
The gallery h-10 chose 9 artists from Chile in which their works are
centered formally or conceptually in the use of photography or the
manipulation of it. A further and important aspect dealt with is the
inclusion of documentary styled elements focusing on a local identity.
The h-10 gallery would like with this selection of artists to represent
contemporary art production in which Latin American identity as well as the
role of art is discussed, built upon a model of goods exportation as the
central economic goal.
