Totomboti
As part of the Foam_3h exhibition series, Foam presents Totomboti by Yamandú Roos. In the autumn of 2006 Roos visited the Totomboti Foundation at the maroon village of Pikienslee in Suriname. Totomboti consists of five Rastafarian men who spend their time making functional art with wood. The Rastafarians support initiatives that stimulate the development of the village: in particular, they teach the inhabitants of Pikienslee to use natural resources in sustainable ways. As an active supporter of Totomboti, Yamandú compiled a reportage of the artists and their work in the village. As well as presenting a portrait of the men who make up Totomboti, Yamandú’s photos also portray the people who live in Pikienslee.
For Foam’s Totomboti exhibition a selection of small photos was chosen emphasising the context in which the artists work. They show the artistic process from start to finish. Meanwhile, the main series of photos explores the actual village and the rich culture of the people of Pikienslee.
This is not Yamandú’s first socially-motivated report. In Uruguayos Campeones, one of his first major projects which he began in 2003, he creates a portrait that emphasises the social, cultural and economic significance of football in Uruguay. The colourful images of the inhabitants of Pikienslee in the present show at Foam underscore Yamandú’s social concern.
Yamandú Roos (b. 1978) has worked as a photographer since 1991. He graduated in 2003 at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague. Besides major fashion and commercial projects for clients such as Nike, he photographs street scenes with an emphasis on youth and future.
