Celebrating Life
On 1 November 2007, Foam Photography Museum in Amsterdam launches an exhibition of work by the young American photographer Ryan McGinley (b. 1977). McGinley has been hailed as one of today’s most promising international photographers. Following exhibitions at MOMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and Galerie du jour Agnés b. in Paris, his work can now be seen for the first time in the Netherlands. The show features a selection of warm and endearing images full of youthful elan from his recent work.
For Celebrating Life McGinley photographed a group of friends on a road trip across America, in homage to American predecessors such as Robert Frank and Richard Avedon. In this series he celebrates freedom and escape from the daily grind against the backdrop of the magnificent American landscape.
McGinley photographed his friends each day, in motels, in the woods and deserts they passed through. The images have a slightly contrived flavour under McGinley’s direction. He chose the route and the destination of the trip, thereby influencing the choice of backgrounds. Yet within this context his friends behave spontaneously. McGinley’s work reveals an affinity with that of Nan Goldin, Larry Clark and Wolfgang Tillmans which also depicts young people living their lives. Unlike the dark, sober photos of his predecessors, for McGinley the theme is pleasure: what marks out Celebrating Life is the extraordinary vitality and lust for life that his friends exhibit in front of the camera.
Ryan McGinley (b. 1977, United States) lives and works in New York. He enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York in 1995. In 1999 he took up photography and made his name with photos of his friends, including skateboarders, graffiti artists and lovers, in Manhattan.
McGinley’s work has appeared in Vice magazine, V, Butt, ID, Dazed and Confused, The Fader and New York Times Magazine. Recently he photographed concerts by cult singer Morissey. In 2007 he received the ICP Infinity Award Young Photographer in New York.
Celebrating Life was curated by agnès b. (stylist, gallery owner, art collector). This exhibition was compiled jointly with Galerie du jour Agnès b.
