Aqua Art Miami

Two venues, Miami

Aqua Art Miami art fair is pleased to announce events in two locations this year for Art Basel week in Miami. Aqua returns for a third year at the popular Aqua Hotel in South Beach near Art Basel Miami Beach, and this year the fair is launching a new venue, Aqua Wynwood, in a warehouse in Miami’s Wynwood gallery district near important venues including the Rubell Collection and many satellite art fairs.

This year Aqua will feature 44 galleries at the Aqua Hotel, and 49 exhibitors at Aqua Wynwood. Based on the west coast, fair organizers have made it their mission to highlight noteworthy programs in their region as well as the greater USA and abroad, with a particular interest in supporting young dealers and galleries with strong emerging artist programs. Approximately 40% of the galleries are from the west coast - from Vancouver, BC to San Diego - with the remainder being from other creative hubs in the US as well as Europe and Canada.

The Aqua Hotel event takes place at a classic South Beach boutique hotel with spacious rooms opening onto a breezy, intimate courtyard. Ranked among the top satellite events during Art Basel week, the Aqua Hotel fair features an outstanding group of emerging and established dealers in a casual, relaxing environment.

For the new Aqua Wynwood event fair organizers have taken a long-term lease on a 28,000 square foot warehouse and designed a unique venue with spacious booths and permanent gallery-quality walls to show art under the most optimal conditions. An invitational fair, Aqua Wynwood will feature popular Aqua veterans as well as many new discoveries.

This year a new generation of dealers will exhibit for the first time. At the Aqua Hotel: fette’s gallery (Culver City), David Patton Los Angeles, Triple Base (San Francisco), Thomas Robertello (Chicago), Project 4 (Washington DC), Kinkead Contemporary (Culver City), Quality Pictures (Portland), CTRL Gallery (Houston), Road Agent (Dallas), and little tree gallery (San Francisco). Aqua will also debut a new gallery by Steven Zevitas, publisher of New American Paintings. At Aqua Wynwood: Luis De Jesus Seminal Projects (San Diego), Marty Walker (Dallas), Meat Market (Washington DC), Man&Eve (London), and Steve Turner Contemporary (Los Angeles).

A highlight at Aqua Wynwood will be a production in the loading bays by Lawrimore Project (Seattle), featuring performances, architectural interventions, social constructions, fashion shows, inflatables, a GRAVITRON, video-based work, light-based work, and omelettes, (see below for details). Aqua Wynwood will also feature work by 2008 Whitney Biennial artist MK Guth (Elizabeth Leach, Portland), and an exhibition produced by the Visual Arts Gallery at the School of Visual Arts in New York, introducing work by a select group of recent graduates.

There will be free Aqua shuttles during regular event hours between Art Basel & the Aqua Hotel, between Art Basel & Aqua Wynwood, and between Aqua Wynwood and NADA. General admission is $10, with admission tickets good for the whole week at both venues (free admission with Aqua VIP pass or Art Basel VIP pass).

The previews for both venues are free and open to the public. Enjoy a chilled Grolsch Swingtop at Aqua Wynwood's preview. At both events during impromptu cocktail hours guests can also enjoy ZYR Vodka drinks and Bud Select, "Exceptional Taste that's Never Filling...Only 99 Calories".

Aqua Wynwood highlights:

The Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland) is pleased to announce the inclusion of Portland, Oregon based artist MK Guth in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. The curators of the 2008 Biennial selected 81 artists from all over the United States but Guth is the sole artist included from the Pacific Northwest. Guth’s latest video, “Allegory of Possible Hopes and Fears – I Will See You on the Other Side” will make its international debut at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery booth at Aqua Wynwood December 4-9th, 2007.

MK Guth is a multidisciplinary artist whose work includes installation, video, photography, performance and sculpture. MK Guth received her MFA from New York University in 2002. Select solo and group exhibitions include the Frye Art Museum (Seattle, Washington 2006), Royal College of Art (Kensington Gore, England, 2006), the Melbourne International Art Festival (Melbourne, Australia 2005), the Nottdance Festival (Nottingham, England 2005), Artist Space (New York, New York 2005), Swiss Art Institute (New York, New York 2004), Catharine Clark Gallery (San Francisco, California 2004), White Columns (New York, New York 2002), Open Wide (Zurich, Switzerland 2000), Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon 1999), and Bellevue Art Museum (Bellevue, Washington 1998). MK Guth received a Merit Award from the Bellevue Art Museum in 1998 and was awarded the Betty Bowen Award by the Seattle Art Museum in 1997.

LAWRIMORE project (Seattle) will include performances, architectural interventions, social constructions, fashion shows, inflatables, a GRAVITRON, video-based work, light-based work, and omelettes.

Specifically for Lawrimore:

Architectural Interventions - the ‘booth’ will be located in the loading dock area of the warehouse, in which Lawrimore Project artists will be playing up ideas of this particular context. Recent Rome Prize recipients, Lead Pencil Studio will present the slightest trace of a shipping container with their welded wire sculpture, “Four Corners.” In one of the three, large roll-up doors, an inflatable doorway by Alex Schweder will cyclically provide and prevent access to the space. A similar inflatable by Schweder was recently acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for its permanent collection.

Performances and Fashion - Collaborative trio, SuttonBeresCuller will be debuting their “pPod” (Performance Pod) in Miami. This interactive, mobile sculpture cum stage, cum karaoke machine will traverse the city engaging audiences and supplying a live video feed back into our space in Wynwood. Young and about to explode onto the art world stage performance duo and current ETSY designers in residence, MIXON DIXON will periodically provide guerilla performances throughout the weekend on and off site as well as ‘host’ periodic, guerilla ‘fashion shows’ by Ruffeo Hearts Lil’ Snotty and Empire Empire who will also be outfitting gallery owner Scott Lawrimore and ALL of his artists in Miami for the duration of the weekend.

Gravitron - Remember that county fair ride where the a large circular barrel spins, the floor drops out from under your feet and you’re sucked up against the wall due to centrifugal force? Yep, we’ll have one of those in our space. Created by installation and video artist, Sami Ben Larbi, his version is scaled down -- is inspired by a scene in Truffaut’s “400 Blows”-- and uses video as the projected subject.

Video and Light-Based Work - A large sculpture by Tivon Rice, “The History of Television, 1974-2006, 2006” pays homage to Nam June Paik and anchors the ‘Black Box’ space of the loading zone created through the use of all the crates used to get Lawrimore Project to Miami. The Black Box will also feature the sculptural video work of Susie J. Lee, a new video with found objects by New York artist, Charles LaBelle, and videos by Anne Mathern, Liz Cohen and Susan Robb.

Social Constructions - For the past 26 weeks a ‘happening’ organized by gallery owner, Scott Lawrimore has been happening in Seattle every Tuesday morning. The IHOP Art Klatch at Cafe Presse is a free-form, open-topic, open-invitation gathering that brings together the major players in the Seattle art scene every week. The Klatch has also played host to a number of visiting artists, curators and collectors. The IHOP Art Klatch at Aqua Wynwood will happen every morning in the space with omelettes with seasonal ingredients from the Pacific Northwest prepared by Lawrimore and his artists.


James Harris Gallery (Seattle), will be showcasing a monumental light sculpture by Claude Zervas whose who was acquired earlier this year by the Whitney Museum of Art. The gallery will also feature new work by Amir Zaki, Roy McMakin, and Rashid Johnson, a young Brooklyn based artist whose work was recently acquired by the Seattle Art Museum and was part of Thelma Golden’s Freestyle at the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY.

Steven Wolf Gallery (San Francisco) will have the first exhibition in decades of neon sculpture by Joe Rees, whose punk rock videos of the 70s and 80s will be on view at the Getty Museum in 2008. Also work by Jacob Dahlgren who transforms mass-produced utilitarian objects into optically charged works of art that amuse, and in the case of his dartboard wall at 2007 Venice Biennale, seethe with danger.

Megumi Ogita Gallery (Tokyo) will feature new Speech Balloons paintings by Kengo Nakamra.

Man&Eve (London) will feature work by Ben Long, who recently received planning permission to construct one of his giant scaffolding sculptures on the North Roundabout at Elephant & Castle in Central London. Man&Eve will also show work by Helga Steppan, one of the UK Winners of Magenta Foundation, Flash Forward – Emerging Photographers, Canada 2007.

Hosfelt (New York & San Francisco) - Australian Timothy Horn, who will have a solo project at San Francisco's de Young Museum opening in the summer of 2008, will exhibit "odette," a 39x24 inch "jewel" made of nickel-plated bronze with grapefruit-sized mirrored-glass black "pearls".

Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland) will have a projection booth inside of their space and feature new work by Matt McCormick, whose videos were recently seen in “Uncertain States of America” and will be featured in Art Basel Miami’s Video Program. The Gallery will also bring recent photo-weavings by internationally known artist Dinh Q Le as well as work by MK Guth, Claire Cowie and others.

Patrick Heide Contemporary (London) will be showing new photocopy drawings from Alex Hamilton’s “Crossroads” Series, of which series numbers II & III were recently sold to the Saatchi collection. Patrick Heide will also present large-scale paper collages especially created for Aqua Art Miami by Minjung Kim, who recently had major retrospective exhibitions in the Guanshanyue Art Musem in Shenzen, China, and the Palazzo Bicherasio in Turin, Italy.

Monya Rowe (New York) will present new paintings by New York-based artist Angela Dufresne, whose work is included in an upcoming group exhibition at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art.

Lisa Boyle Gallery (Chicago) will be featuring the work of Chicago painter, Steven Husby. These large scale geometric abstraction works are making their first art art fair appearance in anticipation of Husby’s solo exhibition at the gallery in April. He was recently featured in a solo “12 x 12” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary in Chicago, and the subject of an Artforum.com “Critic’s Pick” review.

Patricia Faure Gallery (Santa Monica) will be featuring Masami Teraoka’s epic painting “Burqa Inquisition/Chicken Torture.”

Randall Scott (Washington DC) will feature large scale photographic works of Julia Fullerton-Batten, Nathan Baker, Ryoko Suzuki and Lori Nix. Fullerton-Batten recently won the prestigious HSBC Foundation award in Paris and is featured in a traveling exhibition from HSBC that recently had stops in NY, Brussels, Madrid and will open in Paris in January.

g-module (Paris-New York) will be presenting a new large scale acrylic painting on acrylic panel by Gordon Terry, whose works will be featured in the upcoming landmark exhibition “Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art Since the 1960’s” at the San Antonio Museum of Art in the Fall of 2008. g-module will also be presenting a new enamel on formica painting entitled “Extra Vehicular Activity” by Vargas-Suarez Universal, who will also be included in “Claiming Space: Mexican-Americans in U.S Cities” at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, University of Texas at El Paso (spring 2008), and will be featured in the M*A*S*H series’ “Expanded Painting Show” in the Miami Design District during Aqua Art Miami curated by Nina Arias & Paco Barragan. And g-module will present a large drawing on paper by Daniel Zeller, who is a recent recipient of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship in Umbria, Italy whose residency took place this past summer.

habres+partner gallery (Vienna) will present the latest works of Shirley Wegner (1969 born in Tel Aviv / Israel, living and working in New York) from her landscape-series and will debut her first catalogue “On landscape, Gray and other Geographies.”

Dinter Fine Art (New York) will have work available by several of the artists in it’s recent exhibition “Death & Love in Modern Times” - reviewed and highly acclaimed in the New York Times by Roberta Smith - including Dan McCleary, Rob Wynne and David Dupuis.

Meat Market Gallery (Washington DC) will be presenting “hypernostalgic” works by Benjamin Jurgensen, recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship 2007.

Patricia Sweetow (San Francisco) will exhibit paintings and drawings by David Huffman, who was just awarded the prestigious Eureka Fellowship sponsored by the Fleishhacker Foundation. She will also exhibit the glitter paintings of Jamie Vasta, and the collage works of Weston Teruya who both received Artforum “Critic’s Picks” in their first exhibition.

Thierry Goldberg Projects (New York) will be featuring a video by the Berlin based artist Keren Cytter, who recently received the prestigious Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel. Cytter’s work is currently on view in a solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, Austria, and was recently included in The Lyon Biennial, The Moscow Biennial, and in solo shows at Kunst-Werke Berlin, and Kunsthalle Zurich.

Blurring the boundaries between painting, photography, sculpture and video, thirteen recent graduates from New York’s School of Visual Arts consider the 21st-century implications of Victorian domesticity. “Where does nature end and culture begin?” they ask. Artists include a photographer published in The New York Times Magazine as well a painter shown at the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art.

Aqua Hotel highlights:

Miller Block Gallery (Boston) will be exhibiting a wide range of work by Laylah Ali, award winner of the United States Artist Award.

Platform Gallery (Seattle) will be featuring the work of Toronto artist Stephen Andrews. Andrews recently received the Inaugural Bill Olander Award from Visual Aids in New York which was presented by artist Glenn Ligon. Platform will also feature work by Patti Loper, Scott Fife, Jaq Chartier, and Jesse Burke among others.

Western Project (Culver City) will debut bronze sculptures and works on paper by Wayne White, along with new large drawings by Patrick Lee, who’s work has been recently acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the High Museum in Atlanta.

Limn Art Gallery (San Francisco) will present contemporary Chinese artist with work by Sheng Qi, Wang Wingde, Gao brothers, Shen Liang and Zhang Wang among others.

Nettie Horn (London) will feature work by Debbie Lawson, who will be taking part in an exhibition called ‘Interiors’ at Imorderni (in Wynwood) from Dec. 5—31 (‘Interiors’ will also feature works by Dennis Oppenheim, Rebecca E. Chamberlain, Henry Krokatsis and Nathaniel Rackowe).

lemon sky: projects + editions (Miami) will feature the work Alex Heria, one of the of 2007 South Florida Consortium Visual Artists Award winners. Also included will be the work of Vincent Johnson, who recently had a highly critically acclaimed show at LAXART (Los Angeles). Also featured, photo works by up and coming South Florida artists Colby Katz, whose photography will be featured in a show at the National Portait Gallery in London and TJ Ahearn, whose work was included in the blockbuster summer show “NEOINTEGRITY” at Derek Eller Gallery in NYC.

Howard House (Seattle) will be featuring site-specific work on the sun-deck by the 2007 Seattle Art Museum Betty Bowen Award winner Oscar Tuazon and Eli Hansen, and new work by Jon Haddock, who is a recent recipient of the New Media Art Fellowship, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Lounge/Monika Bobinska (London) will be showing a large-scale collage by Adam King, who will also be creating a site-specific collage in their room at Aqua. Adam King has just created a large-scale installation for Mrs Pia Getty in her house in Knightsbridge, London, and his work was recently purchased by Charles Saatchi.

eyewash (Brooklyn) will feature recent Pollock-Krasner award winner Linda Ganjian’s new table-top paper sculpture, Avestan, inspired by an extinct Persian calligraphic script used in the ancient Zoroastrian era.

G. Gibson Gallery (Seattle) will feature work by JoAnn Verburg, who just had a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Catalogs are available through the gallery.

Steven Zevitas (Boston), publisher of New American Paintings, will debut his new gallery program.

Gregory Lind (San Francisco) will feature the work of Sarah Bostwick, who had an exhibition at the Aldrich Museum, Chris Duncan who has exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Jovi Schnell who has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and other artists including Christian Maychack, Jake Longstreth, and Marti Cormand.

New Image Art (Los Angeles) will be highlighting several eminent gallery artists, among them Date Farmers, Cleon Peterson, Sean Cassidy, Judith Supine, and Swoon ( permanent collection) in an exhibition of new works living up to the gallery’s reputation of distinguishing the finest of renowned and emergent talents from the street, skate, and surf scenes.
