at mak.frankfurt and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt
Blood is a very special liquid, this is not only a wisdom of Goethe. The red
elixir of life has always played a special role throughout all ages and
cultures. As symbol of vitality and potency, key component of myths and
religions, likewise of sickness and violence, blood permeates numerous
aspects of life.
Across cultures and epochs, Blood: Perspectives on Art, Power, Politics and
Pathology covers a far-reaching historical period. The chapter Blood and
Sacrifice takes one to the world of the Maya and their barbaric blood
rituals. Blood and Redemption looks at the Redeemer concept in Christian
tradition from the Middle Ages to Late Baroque. Blood and Dynasty
investigates how blood as metaphor dictated the marriage policies of
influential families. Blood and Pathology shows the radical approach of
contemporary artists to the theme blood.
