A painting smuggled into Tate Britain by graffiti artist Banksy went unnoticed until it crashed to the floor hours later, reported BBC.
According to Thomas Krens more than 95% of the Guggenheim's collection is in the depot. As most of the artists wish anyway that their work ends in a museum, the art critic Walter Grasskamp supposes that the art spaces of tomorrow are depots.*
Following its concept to estrange exhibitions from their usual context, Artnews Projects is happy to start the new year with a collaborative show with Dr. Erich Marx. The exhibition shows some unknown works coming directly from his house or depot. This is our second cooperation with a private collection after the show “1627-2007” curated by Christian Ehrentraut with Old Dutch Masters from the SØR Rusche Collection.
“2041” presents works created in the past 33 years by Matthew Barney, Rafal Bujnowski, Karen Davie, Udomsak Krisanamis, Roman Lipski and Cindy Sherman, who take an important part of the collection, but are very rare displayed in its context. While Bujnowski and Lipski belong to a generation of young polish painters, the rest of the artists in the show have hardly anything in common: precise and chaotic, peaceful and explosive, all the works are fighting for their existence in the shadow of Beuys and Warhol.
Now these works are spontaneously in the spotlight to start a dialogue on their past and future. To be or not to be, do they belong to the depot or to a permanent display? We wish to give these artworks the chance to meet the public again, and try to imagine, how this show would look 33 years later in 2041.
