comunicato stampa

In “The estate of the architect Anna Lülja Praun”, Dertnig documents the gradual emptying of the flat in which the influential Austrian architect and furniture designer Anna Lülja Praun lived and worked until her death at the age of 98.

A variety of memorabilia – objects and clothes she found when travelling, furniture designed by herself, unique and collector pieces – now refer to the architect’s cosmopolitic life(style) who, barely recognized, had pursued her activities with great success in the first half of the past century.

Image by image a slide installation leads the spectator through, in their appearance, museum-like private apartments and work situations, from which the fitments and furniture, partly still fondly and carefully arranged by Praun herself, partly already stacked for transport, disappear bit by bit.

By means of a soundtrack narration, a mixture of sentimental description, the reproduction of public perception, and performative appropriation, Dertnig (re)constructs the architect’s life who also coined Dertnig’s own artistic activities.

In „The estate of the architect Anna Lülja Praun“, Dertnig combines diverse layers of memoirs, creating a portrait that refers to something beyond, that sets structural visualisation against archival disappearance.

Also Dertnig’s new collages, here shown for the first time, deal with documentary systems of reference. She assembles a media mix (historical documentation, photographs, drawings, and text fragments) to procedural images of history whose potential oscillates between archive extracts, screenplay excerpts, and stage arrangements.
