Feelings of the Brush. The exhibition features over thirty works by the artist, dating from the 1970s to 2007. The focus is on Kan's artistic pursuit on the concept of painting in relation to Chinese calligraphic compositions.
The University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong is
pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by the internationally
renowned designer and painter Kan Tai-keung. The exhibition features over
thirty paintings by the artist, dating from the 1970s to 2007.
Born in Panyu, Guangdong province in 1942, Kan moved to Hong Kong in 1957.
Since 1964, he learned drawing and watercolour painting from his uncle, Kan
May-tin (1911–1998). Later he studied Chinese ink painting with Lui
Shou-kwan (1919–1975) and applied design with Wucius Wong (b. 1936), in the
Department of Extramural Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Kan has started his career as a designer since 1967 and established his own
design company in 1976. Currently he is Creative Director of the Kan & Lau
Design Consultants, Council Member of the Hong Kong Arts Development, and
Dean of the Cheung Kong Institute of Arts and Design at the Shantou
University.
Kan's earlier ink paintings in the 1970s and 1980s are characterized by
their graphic elements, featuring mountains, rivers, trees and rocks in very
refined concrete brushstrokes. His later works are more naturalistic
landscapes in ink, with the portrayal of mountains, rivers, trees, rocks,
and clouds which possess deeper realism.
The present exhibition will focus on Kan's artistic pursuit on the concept
of painting in relation to Chinese calligraphic compositions. Some of his
recent works consist of seven or nine panels combining visual elements of
painting and calligraphy. Kan implies the structure of the running and
cursive scripts into landscapes forming cloudy mountains and flowing rivers.
A catalogue illustrating the artist's artistic achievements to date, and
containing critical essays by noted scholars will accompany the exhibition.
