This Is War #2. The exhibition comprises eight large, widescreen photographic prints from Stone's ongoing 'This Is War' series. The images continue to explore the complex condition of the media and its dissolution of boundaries between real and fake. The photographs are of plastic toy soldiers arranged within a miniature set complete with scenic backdrop. The resulting images present a fusion of real life and cinema, evocative of both CNN documentary footage and Hollywood action.
This Is War #2
James Noseem Gallery is pleased to present the new works by the
artist Joseph Stone in an exhibition entitled This Is War #2. It will
be the second one-man show for Stone at the James Noseem Gallery.
The exhibition comprises eight large, widescreen photographic
prints from Stone's ongoing 'This Is War' series.
The images continue
to explore the complex condition of the media and its dissolution of
boundaries between real and fake.
The photographs are of plastic toy
soldiers arranged within a miniature set complete with scenic backdrop.
The soldiers are photographed in battle scenes, surrounded by cameras
and sound booms probing every detail of the scene.
The resulting images present a fusion of real life and cinema,
evocative of both CNN documentary footage and hollywood action.
This
blurring of references to real life and entertainment within the
photographs sharpens our awareness to the thin line between the
presentation of the real and the fake within the media.
In his own
words, Stone has described his photographs as "a chaotic mix of our
perceptions of war.
The photographs present a media intensified vision
of stereotypical warfare - they are the sound byte of their own
simulacra."
Joseph Stone Lives and works in London. Since his graduation
from Goldsmiths College in 1999, he has participated in group shows at
the James Noseem Gallery and received his first solo exhibition in 2000.
