Recent works

comunicato stampa

Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by Brazilian artist Marepe at Zimmerstrasse 90/91.

Through a dialogue of the symbolic meanings of the chosen materials and the forms presented this exhibition seeks to create an almost scenographic narrative. Steel wool, used to shine objects, turns into rats sitting on a table.
Different characters are arising from the transformation of chairs. They appear to be discussing subjects that concern Brazilian culture or the contemporary universe, perhaps including such questions as the commonplace corruption or the state of education, health, inequality, violence, memory and youth. Miniature, golden objects adorn a rope suggesting the delicate nature of life while simultaneously creating a visual contrast to the rustic sisal rope that has been severed at its extremities and spread across the exposition space; like an umbilical cord.

Leaning against one of the gallery walls are two spheres moulded from chicken wire that have been wrapped with steel wool. These allude to the primitive sensory world affirming the rural roots and the ancestors of the new people.
Empty cigarette packets construct a grid. Some of the images have been gradually erased in an attempt to diminish the pain and to soften the hard realities of these images. There are two photographic sequences of young school children drinking a kind of popular soft drink bottled in a recipient similar to the beer drunk by adults. This exercise in citizenship and companionship serves as an example and reflection of the global capitalist system.

Marepe was born 1970 as Marcos Reis Peixoto in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia, Brazil where he also lives and works. This is his second solo exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler. He has been featured in numerous expositions including: Panorama da arte brasileira Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (2007); Tropicália: A Revolution in Barzilian Culture Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro (2007); Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo (2007); Veja meu Bem Tate Modern, London (2007); Marepe: vermelho – amarelo – azul – verde Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005); Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte (2005); Sinho Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2004). In 2003 Marepe participated at the Biennials in Istanbul and in Venice.
