Non-geographical mapping and mapping in different formats
In 1935 Phyllis Pearsall walked 3000 miles around London’s streets to design the London A-Z map. This remains one of the most ingenious examples of 20th Century mapping and one of the most common uses associated with the technique. On the Map examines through craft and design, the concept of mapping, exploring what a map is, what can be mapped and how it can be used and manipulated. It challenges the perceptions of the conventional notion of mapping and demonstrates the extent to which it can be stretched and utilised.
On the Map looks at mapping as the creation of simple links or more complex networks of links through various techniques, from physical maps of geographical representations to more abstract responses by contemporary craft and design makers. It explores the manipulation of conventional maps, non-geographical mapping and mapping in different formats. On the Map demonstrates how different craft and design techniques can be applied to the process of mapping, illustrating diverse approaches to the subject.
As well as emerging design talents Stephanie Posavec and Paula Amaral (both graduates of Central Saint Martins College, London), On the Map includes the celebrated design work of Phyllis Pearsall, designer of the A-Z, as well as the contemporary London design firm Kerr|Noble. The exhibition also sees new commissions by textile artist Pauline Burbidge, jewellery designer Betty Pepper and artist Susan Stockwell, all three of whom approach mapping and maps from very different perspectives. Both Susan Stockwell and Pauline Burbidge are highly accomplished in their fields with work in, most notably, the V&A Collection. Susan Stockwell has developed her new work from research she is currently undertaking as part of a British Council funded research trip to Taiwan. The internationally recognised Worldmapper have also contributed to On the Map, having created a digital montage of maps that show territories re-sized according to their subject of interest.
Maps are everywhere, so what they represent and how they are designed and developed is sometimes taken for granted. On the Map uses craft and design to examine the notion of mapping, exploring what a map is, what can be mapped and how maps can be used and manipulated.
