Ninth edition of the international art exhibition. Around 75 galleries from ten different countries present artists who have been selected because of their open outlook and innovative ideas. Galleries such as Mothers Tankstation, Hoet Bekaert, Neue Alte Brucke), Rokeby, Eva Winkeler and Arquebuse have an unconventional programme in store. Present this year for the first time is the largest trendsetter of the Indian galleries Chemould Prescott Road from Mumbai/Bombay.
Art Rotterdam is the international art exhibition of the Netherlands. Around 75 galleries from ten different countries present artists who have been selected because of their open outlook and innovative ideas. The exhibition will take place in a unique setting: the old Cruise Terminal of the Holland America Line at the “Kop van Zuid”, a quarter within Rotterdam’s dockland area.
Ginger Bread Men at the opening of Art Rotterdam 2008
The English group, The Ginger Bread Men will perform at the opening on Wednesday 6 February at 21:00 hours. The spectacular performance of this post-punk group will take place on a stage that is being specially designed by the well-known sculptor Graham Hudson. Hudson is building this stage using a series of portfolio designs that merge minimalism with baroque. Julie Verhoeven, who in the past was responsible for the art direction of the Sugababes and visuals for Primal Scream, is designing a special background for the performance of the young quartet. Ginger Bread Men is a project of ZINGERpresents, Amsterdam.
International galleries
There will be a number of surprising presentations during the ninth edition of Art Rotterdam. Galleries such as Mothers Tankstation (Dublin), Hoet Bekaert (Ghent), Neue Alte Brücke (Frankfurt), Rokeby (London), Eva Winkeler (Frankfurt) and Arquebuse (Geneva) have an unconventional programme in store. Present this year for the first time is the largest trendsetter of the Indian galleries Chemould Prescott Road from Mumbai/Bombay. In collaboration with the Willem Baars Project (Amsterdam), this Indian gallery presents an impressive installation by Anant Joshi.
In addition to the overseas participants, the exhibition will include the cream of the Dutch gallery world.
Illy prize 2008
During Art Rotterdam, this prestigious award will again be given to the most innovative artist at Art Rotterdam. This award means that, amongst other things, he or she will receive an amount of € 10,000. This year, the jury for the Illy award comprises: Nicholas Schafhausen (director Witte de With, The Centre for Contemporary Art), Paolo van de Velde (art editor for “de Telegraaf”), Jan Grosfeld (collector) and Carlo Bach (creative director Illycaffe). The nominated persons will be introduced during a special presentation at Art Rotterdam. The name of the winner will be announced on Wednesday 6 February during the press conference.
Project(OR) – platform for current art stages
During Art Rotterdam, showroom MAMA will present the first edition of Project(OR): a platform for current art stages. In the former post office at Coolsingel 42, Project(OR) brings together, amongst others, Artists Anonymous from Berlin, Fette’s Gallery from Los Angeles and Press to Exit Gallery from Skopje, in a floor area of 1,000 m².
