Hiroko Kikuchi and Tomoe Tanokashira will be doing an all-day-performance, One String of MU, to commemorate the 2001 World Aids Day. The idea comes from the basis of the Taoist notion "oneness" and "co-existence of oppositions." Growing up in Japan, Kikuchi and Tanokashira have come to understand that life is about both living and dying and is built upon simple and small acts and thoughts.

BOSTON MASS - Hiroko Kikuchi and Tomoe Tanokashira will be doing an
all-day-performance, One String of MU, to commemorate the 2001 World
Aids Day. The idea comes from the basis of the Taoist notion
"oneness" and "co-existence of oppositions." Growing up in Japan,
Kikuchi and Tanokashira have come to understand that life is about
both living and dying and is built upon simple and small acts and
thoughts.
In this performance, Kikuchi and Tanokashira tie pieces of noodles
and human hairs(symbols of life) into one string, as a metaphor of
longevity over the course of one day. When it becomes dark, there
will be a ceremonial ending to this piece by burning and eating the
string, made during the performance. Audiences are welcome to walk
around the space and to come in and out as they please after 12 noon.
The ending part will take place approximately between 6pm and 8pm.
Kikuchi recently received a degree in MFA and has performed in the
Boston area including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Center for The
Arts, and Mobius. She is interested in speaking about culture,
primary through food and traditional gestures/rituals as medium.
Tanokashira is a recent graduate from the School of Museum of Fine
Arts, and her focus is sculpture. Her inspiration comes from
sculptural process and material that are found in everyday life. This
is their second collaboration.
