comunicato stampa

Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931)

Guglielmo Pluschow (1852-1930)

Vincenzo Galdi (actif à partir de 1890)

Presentation of sixty photographs from the period, taken by the famous Baron von GLOEDEN from Prussia who came to TAORMINA for its mild climate.

He learned photographic technique from the local photographer Giuseppe Bruno and fixed on glass plates the local inhabitants, landscapes and handsome peasant lads, magnifying and immortalising them with constant reference to classical antiquity. Thus a young shepherd becomes NERO and a labourer VIRGIL. Beauty sublimated, au naturel. This romantic dreamworld made Baron von GLOEDEN the great creator of a unique oeuvre which will forever remain an avant-garde expression in the history of photography of the male nude.

His cousin, von PLUSCHOW, who came from the same area, arrived in Sicily around 1870. He also took photographs of young male nudes and his photographs are often more directly erotic.

Vincenzo GALDI, dates unknown, active in Rome from 1890 on.
Also young male nudes in interiors often filled with statues, drapery and numerous props.
