Museum Moderner Kunst MUMOK, Wien

Out Site_1. The artist creates an artistic intervention in the courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier. The decorative artificiality of his objects ironically reflects the nature of the materials of art and the sculptural transformation of natural objects into artificial objects thus also indirectly posing the question of the process of abstraction. Aluminum and automobile paint in brilliant colors further highlight this process. Curated by Edelbert Kob.

Two times a year, as part of the series OUT SITE_01, MUMOK invites artists to make an artistic intervention in the courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier. With this project, MUMOK hopes to create a greater awareness of contemporary sculpture while at the same time highlighting the primary function of the space to present art.

The first exhibition will show Thomas Stimm (b. 1948 in Vienna), working partly in contrast to his earlier works which were based on forms found in nature. Within the context of the urban architecture of the MuseumsQuartier, an ensemble of enormous flowers and fruits will be set up as a monumental Schrebergarten whose disproportional banality should seem incongruous with the bombastic architecture surrounding it.

The decorative artificiality of his objects ironically reflects the nature of the materials of art and the sculptural transformation of natural objects into artificial objects thus also indirectly posing the question of the process of abstraction. Aluminum and automobile paint in brilliant colors further highlight this process.
Nature is a constant theme in Thomas Stimm’s work which has undergone numerous changes throughout his development: After first creating vast papier-mâché landscapes and smaller-scale narrative scenes out of clay, he began working with flowers and blossoms on a very large scale. Their monumental proportions and size play games with one’s coordinates of perception.

Special thanks to the Collection Dr. Fuchs and the STRABAG AG for their kind support of this project.

In cooperation with Museumsquartier, the city of Vienna and the support of Gartengestaltung Mag. Roman Fuchs.

Opening: March 7, 2008–11.00 a.m.
