Hale will be showing approximately 60 new drawings taken from two series: Miriam Stealing (2000 - 2001) and Miriam & William (2001 - ). Beginning without intention, Hale is lead to each image through the acts of drawing and collage. He is driven by what he describes as, 'following the energy' in each drawing; not knowing what he will draw until he is drawing it, and surprised as much by the cliche' it unleashes, as by the originality. The results are often avid and sexual.
MIRIAM STEALING and MIRIAM & WILLIAM
Mobile Home is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new drawings by
Mathew Hale.
Hale will be showing approximately 60 new drawings taken from two series:
MIRIAM STEALING (2000 - 2001) and MIRIAM & WILLIAM (2001 - ). Beginning
without intention, Hale is lead to each image through the acts of drawing
and collage.
He is driven by what he describes as, 'following the energy'
in each drawing; not knowing what he will draw until he is drawing it, and
surprised as much by the cliché it unleashes, as by the originality. The
results are often avid and sexual.
Hale uses a host' book to structure both series of drawings.
The pages are
cut out and shuffled, so that the order on which they are drawn is random.
This has particular resonance with the first series, MIRIAM STEALING, where
the host book in question is an esoteric guide to the occult science of the
Tarot (The Tarot of the Bohemians', Papus. New York, Samuel Weiser,
1971).
Mathew Hale has most recently shown in the Arts Council of England touring
exhibition, Sublime: The Darkness and the Light', 1999-2000, Sleight of
Hand', Five Years, London 2000 and as part of 'My Friends', Tromso
Kunstforening, Norway 2001. This will be his first solo show in London
since, Mathew Hale: Recent Work', Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1988. Mathew
Hale lives and works in Berlin.
