Inside/Outside
Organized by MoCA and curated by MoCA Director Bonnie Clearwater, Roy Lichtenstein: Inside/Outside is
Miami’s first major exhibition of the late Pop master.
The exhibition features more than 120 paintings, drawings, and sculptures
dating from the early 1960s to Lichtenstein’s death in 1997.
How Lichtenstein conceived and perceived
space is a central theme of the exhibition.
Like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein based his
imagery on cartoons, and he developed his
personal style by making boldly colored
paintings modulated with Benday dots, a
technique used by cartoonists for shading.
Although the Benday dots are a reference to
mass media production in popular culture,
Lichtenstein also used these dots as a means
to represent three-dimensioniality on a flat
surface.
He similarly painted on perforated
steel plates.
In these works the perforations
gave literal depth to the Benday dots of his
paintings.
Lichtenstein’s exploration of
illusionistic and literal space is one of the consistent components to his work throughout his career, and
the spatial effects of his three-dimensional work is especially complex
In these 3-D works he applied the
rules of perspective and foreshortening that he used to create illusionistic space in his 2-D paintings.
The
result is that even when the surface of his three-dimensional works are flat, they appear fully volumetric
to the viewer’s eye.
This exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog featuring essays by authors including
Bonnie Clearwater.
