Tal R - The sum

This new exhibition by Tal R comprises large scale paintings and an installation of over 200 etchings. A self imposed system allows Tal R to challenge the fundamentals of painting using a fixed colour palette and set dimensions. Born in Israel and spearheading a painting revival in Denmark where he lives, Tal R is of the same generation of painters as Peter Doig and Chris Ofili.

Tal R uses seven colours: black, white, pink, green, red, yellow and brown – often applied directly from the tube. He focuses on graphic mark-making and collage, using characteristic blobs and small ‘worms’ of oil paint. The overall effect is childlike – yet their exuberant surfaces hide the seriousness of their content. Floor-based coloured ‘pedestals’ present paintings as sculpture.

Tal R’s influences include the performances of Bas Jan Ader, the dark history of The Holocaust, as well as comic books and children’s doodling. Many of Tal R's self published artist’s books will be on display at Camden Arts Centre, and a new film in which he stars, ‘A Ship is not an Island’ (2007).

Claire Barclay: Shifting ground

Claire Barclay's new sculptural installation is partly inspired by the physical nature of the gallery. It responds to the architectural features, the light and context of Camden Arts Centre as a place for the production and reception of fine art and craft.

Barclay took part in the 'Early One Morning' exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2002 which heralded a new generation of sculptors. Here she is given free rein to pursue her pure pleasure in the process of making.

Her sensitive configurations of different sculpted objects create dynamic juxtapositions of industrial methods and handcrafted items. At Camden Arts Centre she uses materials such as clay, wood, straw and metal.

"Often likened to three-dimensional drawings in space, where each pole, plank and rope represents a carefully placed line drawn between the floor, the ceiling and the walls, her sculptural environments are held together by their own tension."
Emma Mahoney, British Art Show 6, Hayward Gallery, London, 2005.

Barclay challenges our attitudes to ‘craft’ - by employing traditional techniques associated with alternative lifestyle cultures and non-fine art practices, she questions the marginalisation of some crafts and their commodification.
