Bay Area painter, Donald Feasel, opens his fourth solo exhibition at Brian
Gross Fine Art on Thursday, May 22 with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30
pm. Feasel's bold new works are explorations in energetic pours of black
pigment on raw canvas. The exhibition will continue through June 28.
Known for his abstract paintings, Feasel has created new gestural works in a
fresh way. The warmth of the canvas juxtaposed to the dark, energetic lines give the
paintings a retro feel, harkening to the days of cool jazz. The compositions have a
minimal, yet exceedingly vibrant quality, as the marks zig-zag across the canvas,
bouncing from one side to another, drips trailing the spontaneous but controlled
movement. The artist moves from one painting to the next, working on unstretched
canvas later mounted on frames. On display will be small to mid-sized paintings, the
largest painting measuring 48 by 72 inches in size.
Donald Feasel is an accomplished Bay Area painter, whose abstract oil paintings
have generated critical acclaim over the years. Originally from Los Angeles, he
received his BA from UCLA in 1976, and studied with Elmer Bischoff at the University
of California at Berkeley, where he received his MFA in 1984. His work has been
included in numerous Bay Area exhibitions, and he is represented in the collections
of the di Rosa Preserve, Napa, and the San Jose Museum of Art. He is currently a
lecturer at San Jose State University and maintains his studio practice in San
Francisco.
