"The everyday becomes a trail of truth when it is jarred out of its common sense context...”
(re)constructing reality does not deal in proclamations about the grand truths of our reality, but focuses on the small and insignificant in our existence. This exhibition centers on both the construction and the reconstruction of everyday reality.
Jaap Scheeren and Karine Versluis offer us an intimate view on daily life with their documentary photography. Scheeren has made a loving series of photos of his grandmother Toos, while Versluis went to Barcelona to photograph elderly people in their homes for her series Barceloneta, la gent gran. In contrast, Zhana Ivanova and Wannes Wouters obviously construct their own realities, yet they do incorporate familiar elements in their work. Ivanova, with her performance Borrowed Splendour, turns an all-too-recognizable scene at a bar into a nearly claustrophobic experience. And finally, Wouters, with his Toltec Superreflector, literally and figuratively researches the mirror aspect of human existence, as he creates a bizarre situation in an everyday setting.
By way of research, documentary or playful performance, the artists reveal underlying structures of common sense reality. They show us their view of what we experience as normal, and in so doing they return a sense of unique wonder to daily life.
