Soy mi madre
Straddling the line between voyeurism and active participation, the artwork of Phil Collins engages subcultures within local communities to create performance-based video works. Collins’s interest in eschewing the spectacular in favor of the intimate stems from the fact that “intimacy is a value denied by reportage.” As the Aspen Art Museum’s first Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence, Collins will collaborate with writers and actors in the area to produce an Aspen-centric “soap opera.” Produced in collaboration with Aspen’s Grassroots TV12 and broadcast on-air, the resulting work will also be available for viewing at the AAM beginning on the evening of the opening reception (August 14, 2008). A fully-illustrated catalogue will also be produced to document the exhibition.
The Aspen Art Museum’s Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence program furthers the museum’s goal of engaging the larger community with contemporary art. The public is invited to visit the artist in-studio, with residencies lasting anywhere between forty-eight hours and two months.
Phil Collins was born in 1970 in Runcorn, England, and currently lives in Glasgow, Scotland. Collins has had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Britain; Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent; and Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio. His work has been included in the 9th International Istanbul Biennial, the 3rd Tirana Biennial, Manifesta 3, and the 55th Carnegie International. In 2006, he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize.
Phil Collins’s Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence and exhibition are organized by the Aspen Art Museum and funded in part by the AAM National Council. Additional underwriting and sponsorship provided by Grassroots TV 12. Accompanying exhibition publication is underwritten by Toby Lewis. AAM Art Talks are part of the Questrom Lecture Series.
