Van Gogh & Gauguin

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

The exhibition examines the personal and artistic development of both artists and focuses in particular on their mutual influence during their short period of collaboration in Arles in 1888. Masterpieces by both artists have been brought together from all over the world to tell the story of their association and the final parting of their ways. Although their intense and dramatic relationship has long held an almost legendary status in the history of modern art, the story has never been told in the form of an exhibition before now.

Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin's meeting in Paris marked the beginning of one of the most talked about artistic friendships in the history of art. It was a relationship in which hope and disappointment, camaraderie and rivalry, admiration and jealousy constantly alternated, and which captivate both artists emotionally and artistically until their death.

The major Van Gogh & Gauguin show that closed on 13 January was an enormous success for The Art Institute of Chicago. A total of 690.951 people visited the exhibition. This is the highest number of visitors for a temporary exhibition at the museum since their Claude Monet retrospective in 1995.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will host Van Gogh & Gauguin from 9 February to 2 June 2002. The museum has extended its opening hours (daily 09.00 to 21.00; Monday and Thursday until 18.00) to give as many people as possible the chance to see the exhibition.
