A FORUM AND PERFORMANCE EXAMINING
CONTEMPORARY CHINESE INSTALLATION ARTIST QIN YUFEN
February 9, 2002, from 2-4 p.m
(PITTSBURGH)- The Mattress Factory will hold a forum and performance, Beautiful Violence, on Saturday, February 9, 2002, from 2-4 p.m. The forum will examine the work of contemporary Chinese installation artist Qin Yufen (whose installation Beautiful Violence is featured in the museum's Visual Sound, Part II exhibition) from a variety of engaging perspectives, including: Qin Yufen's evocative and innovative use of sound elements and nontraditional media; the artist's childhood memories of the Cultural Revolution; the historical, political and social contexts surrounding the creation of her art; and the relationship of Qin Yufen's work to theatre and music.
The program will include guided tours, presentations, Q&A with participants and live music. Food will be generously donated by P.F. Chang's, located at the Waterfront in Homestead.
The program will feature musical performances and demonstrations by two leading ethnomusicologists. Helen Rees of UCLA will play two traditional Chinese flutes--the transverse flute, or dizi, which is used in much folk and traditional music, often outdoors, in teahouses, or for accompanying opera, and the vertical flute, or xiao, which is a very quiet instrument often used in small indoor ensembles. The xiao frequently accompanies the seven-string zither, or qin, which will be played by Bell Yung of the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Lu will also be signing his new publication, China: Transnational Visuality, Global Postmodernity (Stanford University Press, 2001), which is available at the museum's gift shop.
Two new CD-ROMs will be on view at computer work stations during the forum for visitors to enjoy: Visual Sound, Mattress Factory, 2001, and Contemporary Chinese Societies: Continuity and Change, University of Pittsburgh, Asian Studies Program, 2001. The CD-ROMs will be for sale in the museum's gift shop.
This program is underwritten in part by the Asian Studies Program, University of Pittsburgh, and the World of Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
