KIMBERLY VENARDOS & COMPANY is pleased to announce abstractions, an exhibition of new paintings by Larry Bemm, Lawrence Cromwell and Elizabeth Hauser.

Pulsating forms that verge on figuration, luminous architectural structures floating in space, shapes that convey the youthful exuberance of childhood - abstractions introduces the work of three contemporary artists engaged in a metaphysical dialogue with abstract painting and popular culture. With strategies ranging from subtle reference to aggressive confrontation, from dense, stylized forms to broad fields of color, each artist poignantly engages themes and structures that reflect both individual and collective experience.

The paintings of LARRY BEMM combine simplified forms and warm, sweet colors that obliquely refer to everyday life. Works such as American Midwest Hotdish and Sweet Italian Baby Sausage recall the simple pleasures of childhood - going to the circus, playing with plastic toys and marveling at colorful food packages in the supermarket. Bemm's lively abstractions reflect a Pop sensibility reduced to its most basic elements.

In the work of LAWRENCE CROMWELL, figures and objects metamorphose and become fragmented as they weave into a hedonistic frenzy. His erotically charged canvases reflect an obsessive longing and unfettered narcissism. Cromwell's psychedelic constellations of sexual and social commentary float within seemingly infinite expanses of intense, bright color.

Blending linear and biologic forms, ELIZABETH HAUSER creates an elegant architecture that suggests a meeting point in the relationship between energies of the psyche and the reality of physical sensation. Investigating the setting and structure of dreams, memory and energy, the content of Hauser's work lies in the notion of desire, a drive that both vexes and inspires.

LARRY BEMM was selected for the 2001 Pacific Northwest Annual at the Bellevue Art Museum, his third invitation following those in 1999 and 1997. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. A frequent juror and lecturer, Bemm has held teaching positions at the University of Puget Sound and Sichuan Academy of Fine Art in Chongqing, China. He received his BFA from Illinois State University.

LAWRENCE CROMWELL's work has been featured in exhibitions in Albuquerque, Providence, and Washington, DC. From 1997 to 1998 he taught drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design and currently maintains studios in both Providence and Brooklyn, NY. He received a BFA from the University of Tennessee and an MFA from RISD.

ELIZABETH HAUSER has exhibited at the Greenhill Center of Contemporary Art, as part of Bill Arning's show White Columns at Greenhill, and the Duke University Museum of Art. She was selected for inclusion in the 1996 North Carolina Artists Triennial at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Hauser completed studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, received a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Opening reception on Thursday, February 14th from 6pm to 8pm
