Ricco/Maresca Gallery announces an exhibition of new photographic work by
Michael Flomen. In Higher Ground, the artist has produced a series of large
images with light from an unlikely source- fireflies.
Flomen's earlier body of work, "Rising," references sunlight and snow in fields,
transforming familiar landscapes into images that could be the moon, a starry
night or a nebulous voyage into space. In turning his attention to the
movement and form of the firefly, "photography by natural light" takes on
new meaning. The fireflies' paths in Higher Ground look like constellations in
uncharted galaxies, or perhaps a scientific rendering of synapses firing in the
human brain, some unseen navigation through the big bang. Here, he has
taken abstraction to a new level. In his very intricate images, Flomen
captures the tireless experience of an environment infused with elusive light
and natural beauty. The act of seeing the finished images becomes a journey
in which the viewer is inspired to feel a sense of transcendence.
Michael Flomen has been exhibited internationally and his work is in
numerous collections including the George Eastman House and the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art.
