Nancy Spero (Ohio, Cleveland, 1926) is one of the most radical figures linked to feminist art in terms of both her creative output and her political discourse. Her work stems from her social and cultural commitment on two fronts: her critical view of the contemporary political situation and the exploration of the body as a tool for articulating her discourse. This duality now materialises at the MNCARS, which will offer the first major retrospective of this artist in Europe starting on 5 January.

A pioneer of feminist art, Spero began to develop her career on the New York anti-establishment scene of the 1960s by challenging the dominant aesthetic and ideological standards. To this end, she focused her efforts on crafting a specifically feminine graphic language that represents women’s ability to transform a space of their own. But the artist goes even further, using her art to depict the corruption of power, social injustices and the atrocity of war conflicts, incorporating explicit references to violent and sexual elements. Curated by the director of the MNCARS, Manuel Borja-Villel, and the director of the Collections Department, Rosario Peiró, the exhibit has been co-produced with the MACBA, where it was recently shown.

The 178 works featured in it are arranged chronologically and span Spero’s entire career, from artworks created in her university years (making their first public appearance ever) to her latest monumental installations and her famous experiments on paper.
