Reflejo. With the curatorial support of Mexican artist Luis Felipe Ortega Art&Idea invites 6 artists with very diverse national, religious and artistic backgrounds to investigate and test the physical and conceptual limits of the new space. The intentionally very open-ended curatorial approach of Reflex/Reflejo results in a laboratory of ideas where new concepts of art, society, politics and individual behavior, feelings and actions can be activated.

ART&IDEA is pleased to announce the opening of Reflex/Reflejo presenting the work of
Arturo Hernández (Mexico), Heidrun Holzfeind (Austria), Emiko Kasahara (Japan), Susan
Leopold (USA), Miguel Monroy and Laureana Toledo (both Mexico).
Reflex/Reflejo marks the
30th show of ART&IDEA in Mexico since 1995 and celebrates the opening of the new and
expanded space designed by Enrique Norton at Parque España 47, Colonia Condesa in
Mexico City on Thursday, February 21st, 2002.
With the curatorial support of Mexican artist Luis Felipe Ortega ART&IDEA invites 6 artists
with very diverse national, religious and artistic backgrounds to investigate and test the physical
and conceptual limits of the new space. The intentionally very open-ended curatorial approach
of Reflex/Reflejo results in a laboratory of ideas where new concepts of art, society, politics and
individual behavior, feelings and actions can be activated.
Arturo Hernández, an emerging Mexican artist, started his preparation for Reflex/Reflejo with
a quote by T.S. Elliot: "In my beginning is my end" and locked himself up in a rented room in
downtown Mexico City. His piece 'On the 3rd of January 2002 I entered a rented
room-leaving it on January 30th (or not)' transforms the self-contained micro-cosmos he
created during several weeks of seclusion with the help of some essential ingredients such as
books, music and cigarettes into the setting of ART&IDEA’s white cube.
Heidrun Holzfeind, born in Lienz, Austria studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and
most recently exhibited at Fondazione Olivetti, Rome, Roebling Hall, New York, Diagonale,
Graz, Museumsquartier, Depot, Brasilika, Kunsthalle Exnergasse all in Vienna, and at PS1
Clocktower, New York amongst others. Her work examines social structures and issues, an
exploration of the mechanism of self-representation and the possibility of individuality in a
modern urban environment. In investigating the boundaries between documentary film and video
art, questioning what is documentary, what is fiction, interpretation, or projection, Holzfeind’s
work also addresses the ambiguities of the media itself with its various strategies of self-relation
and representation reminding the viewer of what she/he sees is always a mediated depiction of
reality.
Emiko Kasahara was born in Japan and completed a master degree in Fine Arts at Tama Art
University in Tokyo. Her work was recently shown at White Box Gallery in New York, Kresge
Art Museum in Michigan, Yokohama Triennale in Japan, 3rd Kwangju Biennale in Korea,
Contemporary Art Museum in Warsaw, as well as at the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Tokyo. Throughout her career Kasahara has examined the notion of beauty, national identity
and gender politics. In her new performance piece 'La Charme' as well as in the multiple
'Manus Cure' she questions the confused relationship between nature and artificialness, object
and subject, life and death, difference and resemblance. Her interest lies in walking the fine line
between these contradictions to decode the more complex, confusing and dualistic aspects of
our life.
Susan Leopold was born in Chicago and graduated from the School of Visual Arts at New
York University. Her work has been extensively shown in the US, especially in New York such
as at Exit Art, Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris, Brooklyn Museum, Franklin Furnace, Art at
the Anchorage, John Weber Gallery amongst others. On both small -and large- scales, her work
explores the shifting nature of perception and how memory transforms the experience of space.
Her installations and sculptures merge photographic and constructed illusions with the actual
environment, establishing a simultaneous relationship between the viewer and the surroundings.
Intimate perspectives are charted out and pieced together in the mind's eye, raising questions
about how architecture is integrated into our daily lives and personalized by human experience.
Miguel Monroy, another young Mexican artist, is manipulating everyday objects combining
and juxtaposing them to redefine their message. With minimal intervention he succeeds in
destabilizing a given balance and meaning. Creating site-specific works he not only
recontextualizes the found object but playfully intervenes with the rules of the existing space and
its predetermined architectonic program.
Laureana Toledo, born in Mexico City studied Photography at ICP in New York and Centro
de la Imagen in Mexico City. Her work has been presented in numerous sol and group
exhibitions such as at Lunds Kunsthall, Sweden, Whitechapel Art gallery, London, Museo El
Chopo, Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, Ex teres Arte Actual, all in Mexico City, Espace d’Art
Yvonamor Palix, Paris, Louisiana Museum of Contemporay Art, Denmark, Throckmorton Fine
Arts, New York. In Reflex/Reflejo she presents a collaborative project with Enrique Rangel,
base player at 'Café Tacuba', titled "Mexicali Boogie Woogie". The work is obviously
referencing the work of Mondrian even though Toledo stresses the fact that she is less
investigating the formal significance of color composition but much more the notion of a self
guided, automated creation of art by combining a system of sound, color and light within a
strictly defined video installation.
